  1. Jigani school site visit Talk about: • Children’s socio-economic condition. • Education in general at Jigani. • Other Info/ Issues. • TODO list.

  2. Children’s socio-economic condition • Met about 30 children from 6th to 12th std. • Most of them are from weak socio-economic background. • Lot of children moved from a govt school from various surrounding areas primarily because there are no govt. schools for high school.

  3. Education. • Although the school tries to provide quality education, seemed like the main reason to attend high school here is due to non-availability of govt. schools for high school. • School provides a bridge program in 8th std for ramping students but students seem to have difficulty.

  4. Contd.. • Seems like there is a lot of demand. Rejected a number of applications for primary and high school. • Students have a hard time moving from kannada medium to english medium in 11th standard. • Students are asked to join Science program based on merit.

  5. Contd.. • We observed more students in BCom than Science. • School provides basic computer education. Not sure how much it helps in providing a job. • Mgmt doesn’t have money to provide industrial training. Building and equipment cost close to 10 lakhs.

  6. Info/Issues • Sent reqd. docs for FCRA clearance Prior permission. • No program for ensuring students who graduate can find a job in the industrial estate. Misc • Teachers paid between 3k – 6k. • Many teachers are staying there hoping to join govt. schools. • High school fees ~= 2k • College fees ~= 3.5 to 3.9k

  7. TODO • Could not talk to parents of students. • Could not talk to kids who have dropped out. • Find out what we can do to ensure students can join teacher training program (TCH). • Find out if we can use the industrial estate to provide jobs to students after 10th/12th. • Need to get a better understanding of the community to address employment for children.
