  1. Space Exploration Unit 9 Critical Vocabulary

  2. Inertia Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction.

  3. Universe The Universe is the totality (all) of existence. This includes planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all matter and energy. EVERYTHING!

  4. Galaxy A galaxy is a massive, gravitationally bound system consisting of stars, stellar remnants, an interstellar medium of gas and dust, and dark matter.

  5. Gravity The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.

  6. Force In physics, a force is any influence that causes an object to undergo a certain change, either concerning its movement, direction, or geometrical construction.

  7. Solar System The Solar System consists of the Sun and the objects that orbit it, whether they orbit it directly or by orbiting other objects that orbit it directly.

  8. Velocity Velocity is the rate of change of the position of an object

  9. Space Probe A space probe is a unmanned spacecraft that leaves Earth orbit and explores space Voyager Space Probe

  10. Space Station The International Space Station is a space station, or a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth orbit.

  11. Rocket A rocket is a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle that obtains thrust from a rocket engine.

  12. Satellite A satelliteis an artificial object which has been intentionally placed into orbit.

  13. Shuttle A rocket-launched spacecraft, able to land like an unpowered aircraft, used to make repeated journeys between the earth and earth orbit.
