  2. La Lengua – The Tongue • Introducción. La lengua puede causar mucho daño y también puede producir mucho bien. • Introduction. The tongue can cause much harm and also can produce great good.

  9. La Lengua – The Tongue • A. Mentir, para cubrir otro pecado, o para no lastimar los sentimientos de alguien, o para tomar ventaja de otros, o para evitar problemas (por ej., castigo), etc. • A. Lying, to cover another sin, o to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, or to take advantage of others, or to avoid problems (for ex., punishment), etc.

La Lengua – The Tongue • No mentir a los cobradores (“mamá dice que no está”), al IRS, al patrón, a los clientes; no decir que está enfermo para no ir al trabajo, a la escuela, a la iglesia, etc. • Not lie to bill collectors (“mama says she is not here”), to the IRS, boss, customers; not say you’re sick so you won’t have to go to work, school, church, etc.

  18. La Lengua – The Tongue • “El viento del norte trae la lluvia; y la lengua detractora, el rostro airado”, Prov. 25:23. ¡Resistir al chismoso! • “The north wind brings forth rain, And a backbiting tongue an angry countenance,” Prov. 25:23. Resist the gossiper!

La Lengua – The Tongue • ¿Nos gusta escuchar a los que critican y condenan a los hermanos? ¿Criticamos y aun hacemos burla de otros hermanos para que nos sintamos más santos y fieles? • Do we like to hear those who criticize and condemn brethren? Do we criticize and even make fun of other brethren so that we can feel more holy and faithful?

La Lengua – The Tongue • ¿Hablamos de otros, y aun de hermanos, porque no somos capaces de platicar de temas bíblicos o por lo menos de ideas y temas importantes? • Do we talk about others, even brethren, because we aren’t capable of discussing Bible subjects or at least important ideas and subjects?

  21. La Lengua – The Tongue • Si hay visita o estamos de visita hay que platicar. Entonces ¿de qué vamos a platicar? ¿Es el tema más interesante el de las faltas de los hermanos? • If there’s a visitor or we are visiting, we must talk to each other. So what do we talk about? Is the most interesting subject the faults of the brethren?

  22. La Lengua – The Tongue • Recuerde que el daño hecho a la reputación de otro no se puede reparar. (Ilustración de soltar las plumas de una almohada en el viento; no se pueden recoger). • Remember that the damage done to some-one’s reputation can’t be repaired. (Illustra-tion of releasing feathers from a pillow in the wind; they cannot be gathered up.)

  24. La Lengua – The Tongue • C. Lisonjear (adular). Es pura hipocresía alabar a alguien en su presencia y luego meterle el cuchillo en su ausencia. • C. Flatter. It’s pure hypocrisy to praise someone in his presence and then knife him in the back in his absence.

  32. La Lengua – The Tongue • F. Palabras corrompidas. “Ninguna palabra obscena salga de vuestra boca, sino la que sea buena para edificación según sea necesaria”, Efes. 4:29. • F. Corrupt speech. “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification,” Eph. 4:29.

Bromas sexuales, insinuaciones… • “Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks,” Eph. 5:4. Sexual jokes, insinuations…

  34. La Lengua – The Tongue • “Comedias” de la TV repletas con lenguaje corrupto. ¡Huele como basura podrida en día caliente del verano! • TV “comedies” replete with corrupt language. Stink like rotten garbage on a hot summer day!

  35. La Lengua – The Tongue • G. Uso profano del nombre de Dios. No solamente el jurar a la ligera (Mat. 23:16-22), sino el decir “Dios mío”, “válgame Dios” y expresiones semejantes. • G. Profane use of the name of God. Not only loose swearing (Matt. 23:16-22), but also saying “My God,” “válgame Dios” and similar expressions.

  36. La Lengua – The Tongue • “No tomarás el nombre del SEÑOR tu Dios en vano”, Ex. 20:7. “Santo y temible es su nombre”, Salmo 111:9. • “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,” Ex. 20:7. “Holy and awesome is His name,” Psalm 111:9.

Murmur. Complaints, criticisms made with a bad attitude; “Do all things without complaining and disputing,” Phil. 2:14; “Do not speak evil of one another,” James 4:11.

  39. La Lengua – The Tongue • J. Maldecir. “Sea quitada de vosotros toda amargura, enojo, ira, gritos, maledicencia, así como toda malicia”, Efes. 4:31. • J. Cursing. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice,” Eph. 4:31.

  40. La Lengua – The Tongue • Expresiones que usan los términos “hell” (infierno) y “damn” (condenar) son palabras de maldición y no deben usarse. • Expressions that use the terms “hell” and “damn” (condemn) are curse words and should not be used.

  41. La Lengua – The Tongue • K. Habla demasiado. “En las muchas palabras no falta pecado, pero el que refrena sus labios es prudente”, Prov. 10:19. • K. Talk too much. “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise,” Prov. 10:19.

  42. La Lengua – The Tongue • “Lo que ella dice es verdad, pero el problema es que ¡ella sabe MUCHA verdad! • “What she says is truth, but the problem is that she knows a LOT of truth!”

  43. La Lengua – The Tongue • No hay que contar toda verdad que sepamos. Hay mucha verdad que no debe repetirse. ¿Ayuda? ¿Edifica? • We don’t have to tell every truth we know. There is much truth that should not be repeated. Does it help? Edify?

  44. La Lengua – The Tongue • “El que guarda su boca guarda su vida, pero al que mucho abre sus labios le vendrá ruina”, Prov. 13:3. • “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction,” Prov. 13:3.

  45. La Lengua – The Tongue • A muchos les gusta contar todo lo que saben, pero de esa manera es obvio que no saben nada. “Cuando calla, hasta el insensato es tenido por sabio”, Prov. 17:28. • Many people like to tell everything they know, but in that way it’s obvious that they don’t know anything. “Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise,” Prov. 17:28.

  46. La Lengua – The Tongue • Con razón, pues, Santiago 3:6 dice, “Y la lengua es un fuego; es un mundo de maldad”. • With good reason, then, James 3:6 says, “and the tongue is a fire; a world of iniquity.”

  47. La Lengua – The Tongue • II. Palabras que salvan y edifican. “La lengua de los sabios es medicina”, Prov. 12:18. • II. Words that save and edify. “But the tongue of the wise promotes health,” Prov. 12:18.

  48. La Lengua – The Tongue • A. Enseñar el evangelio. “Así que los que habían sido esparcidos iban por todas partes predicando la palabra”, Hech. 8:4. • A. Teach the gospel. “those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word,” Acts 8:4.

  49. La Lengua – The Tongue • “Entonces Felipe abrió su boca, y comenzando desde esta Escritura, le anunció el evangelio de Jesús”, Hech. 8:35. • “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him,” Acts 8:35.
