  1. Feasibility of an echo-seeded FEL for LCLS IID. Xiang, G. Stupakov, Z. Huang From 240 nm seed laser to 6 nm x-ray and below

  2. HGHG EEHG Replica

  3. Overview • Over the last year we have studied the EEHG for various soft x-ray projects, with the beam energy <2 GeV. Harmonic generation up to n=50 was demonstrated in computer simulations. In a recent paper, Zholents and Penn considered n=90, two-color seeding for the LBNL proposal. FERMI@ELETTRA, LBNL, SwissFEL, SDUV-FEL are interested in using EEHG in their projects. • Going to higher beam energies makes the effect of quantum diffusion during synchrotron radiation in bends larger, which tends to smear out the fine structure in the phase space and eventually limits the maximal harmonic number n.

  4. Parameters for EEHG in LCLS-II

  5. Comments • This parameter list is not yet optimized. • The chicane strength of 4.3 mm is a fraction of the LCLS BC2 chicane of 22 mm. • The total length of the seeding section (M1+M2+BC1+BC2) is approximately 25-30 m. • Seeding requires improved energy stability of the beam • Start-to-end simulation is needed to evaluate the effect of machine errors, beam energy jitter, beam energy chirp, etc.

  6. Extention to shorter wavelength with frequency doubler or tripler Pre-bunched beam from EEHG undulator Z=1m Z=5m Z=13m Z=5m Bunching factor is 8%
