  1. Catch a Falling Obelisk Mark Barahman, Dan Feldman, Jeremy Lyons, & Michelle Plastrik Science and Technology of New York City Professor: Sophia Perdikaris Technical Advisor: Gregory Donovan Abstract/Introduction • The future of the ancient world is at a crossroads, for pollution and climate threaten the preservation of antiquities. This global problem can be found in our own backyard, New York City, where the Egyptian obelisk is slowly deteriorating, as is its twin in London. Our project sheds light on the dangers facing these obelisks and the technology being used to stop the ravages. • To compare the conditions of the obelisks, and investigate corrosion mechanisms of granite, we studied atmospheric composition in terms of air-borne molecules and chemicals, data about weather and precipitation, and the impact of organisms on exposed granite. We investigated past and present preservation methods, and evaluated what must be done in the future to best maintain the obelisks. We identified which preservation techniques are most effective in protecting the obelisks, and determined the efficiency of these methods. • A brief explanation of the relevance of our project • A brief history of the obelisks in Egypt • A brief history of the obelisks in the Western Hemisphere OBELISK 1 OBELISK 2 Results Atmospheric Data Corrosion Mechanisms Methods of Preservation CHART CHART CHART or PICTURE Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Conclusions Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Bibliography Acknowledgements Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technology.
