Geologists use physics of waves to study and measure the tectonic-plate motion and predict earthquake. Electromagnetic waves and Mechanical waves • The waves associated with electric and magnetic fields, resulting from the acceleration of an electric charge are called Electromagnetic waves. • These waves include visible and ultraviolet light, radio waves, X-rays etc. These waves require no material medium for their propagation. • In the electromagnetic waves, the wave velocity is represented by "c" c-velocity of light in vacuum. C=3x108 ms-1 •  Very large distances which could not be measured was called asceleris. The first letter of this word "c" is used as the symbol for the speed of light in vacuum. • The waves which need a material medium for their propagation are called Mechanical waves. We come across these waves very often.
