  1. Masks that students wear in the classroom.

  2. All of these masks are masks of feared failure. When we “wear” these masks we are trying to hide the fact that we fear failure. So we act out and try to be “funny”.

  3. CLASS CLOWN If I act like a clown, no one will know that I can’t do the work or that I’m afraid to do the work.

  4. BOREDOM MASK“This is so boring. This is so stupid” When a student says this, they are trying to cover up the fear of failure. They don’t think they can do the work.

  5. BEING BAD MASK If I’m bad enough, the teacher will send me to the dean and I won’t have to do the work and no one will know that I’m afraid of failure or that I can’t do the work.

  6. MASK OF THE VICTIM “The teacher hates me—it’s not fair” If I act like a victim, the teacher and everyone will feel sorry for me and they won’t know I’m afraid of failure. I act like a victim so I won’t have to do the work.

  7. MASK OF HELPLESSNESS “Miss, I don’t get it”. The teacher has fully explained the lesson but if I say “I don’t get it”, even when I do, I will get extra attention and I won’t have to do the work because she’ll come do it for me.

  8. MASK OF SICKNESS“I don’t feel good. I am tired. My head hurts.” If I act sick then I won’t have to do the work and no one will know that I fear failure or that I can’t do the work.
