Why does ice feel cold to the touch? • Ice on hands cause the heat in your hand to go into the ice causing it to melt • What is this heat? Energy transferring between objects at different temperatures
What form of energy is being transferred as heat? • Thermal energy – total kinetic energy of the particles that make up a substance • Kinetic – energy of motion • Warmer objects have more kinetic energy than cooler The amount of kinetic energy transferred is dependent on 2 factors:
1. The difference between the temperatures, the greater the difference the more the thermal energy transfer • 2. The amount of matter • Ex. Warm bricks have more thermal energy than a small marble
What is thermal equilibrium? • Point at which 2 objects touching each other reach the same temperature no difference in kinetic energy
Can energy only be transferred by touching? • No, 3 different ways: • 1. Conduction – transfer of energy as heat goes through 1 material into another • Ex. Frying pan on hot stove • Heat from the stove is transferred by the hot coils on stove to the frying pan
2. Convection – transfer of energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas • Ex. Water heating, boils, as water heats it rises to the surface as cooler water sinks • Convection current – motion of warmer material rising and cooler material sinking
3. Radiation – transfer of energy as electromagnetic waves • Ex. Getting warmed by the sun
