  2. THE DIGITAL AGE In the year 2000, 1 billion rolls of film were sold worldwide. In the year 2011 it was down to 20 million

  5. Since the arrival of digital media, the realm of photographic imagery has expanded, with cameras inside telephones, images transmitted across the internet, and the entire planet photographed and made available free-of-charge on Google. Every 2 minutes today we snap as many photos as the whole of humanity took in the 1800s. In fact, ten percent of all the photos we have were taken in the past 12 months. We now take 4 times as many photos as 10 year ago.

  7. THE FIRST DIGITAL CAMERA - 1975 It captured images using a CCD imager and digitized and stored the digital info on a standard audio cassette. It took 23 seconds to record the digitized image to the cassette.

  8. THE FIRST DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPH - 1975 The data from the tape interpolated the 100 captured lines to 400 lines, and generated a standard NTSC video signal, which was then sent to a television set. Resolution was 0.01 megapixels (10,000 pixels)

  9. THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPH ON THE WWW Les Horribles Cernettes was a comedy singing group based at CERN, the atomic particle research facility in Switzerland Co-creator of the WWW, Tim Berners-Lee  wanted to test its capacity for sending photographs rather than vector diagrams. The date was July 18, 1992 http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/crossdressing-compression-and-colliders-the-first-photo-on-the-web

  10. THE DIGITAL AGE Photoshop 1.0 was released on February 19, 1990 for Macintosh exclusively. At that time, digital retouching on dedicated high end systems, such as the SciTex, cost around $300 an hour for basic photo retouching.

  13. “During the main printing exposure of 10 seconds I hold back the shadows cliff area near the right hand edge for 2 seconds; too much dodging will produce weak weak blacks. After the basic exposure I burn the the bottom edge of the print for 2 seconds and the right hand edge for 2 seconds in each case tilting the the card to favour the sky…

  14. … Burning is required from the base of the sun-lit forest areas near the waterfall, to the top of the image, with three up and down passages of 3 seconds each. I then burn the sky along the top for 10 seconds, continuing with 2 and 4 seconds at the upper left corner. Then, using a hole 1 inch wide, I burn the central area for 10 seconds, and then bring the whole closer and burn the smaller area of cloud for an additional 10 seconds.”

  15. EDWARD WESTON "The camera should be used for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself, whether it be polished steel or palpitating flesh.” Edward Weston, Nude, 1936

  16. THE ART OF THE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHYThe plasticity of digital imaging encourages exploration of the plasticity of identity

  18. Daniel Lee, Manimals, 1995Chinese lore has it that people have the personality and behavioral traits and even a physical  resemblance to the animal that defines their sign in the Chinese zodiac. The images are a new blending of photography and illustration. Chris Dorley-Brown, The Face of 2000 Setting up a mini studio in in the village of Haverhill in rural England, Dorley-Brown made 2000 portraits on a Nikon digital camera over a three month period in the summer of 2000. Using computer software such as Photoshop and Morph, the photographs were then merged to create a composite portrait of a whole village.

  25. GLITCH ARTGlitch art is the aestheticization of digital errors, such as artifacts and other "bugs", by either corrupting digital code/data or by physically manipulating electronic systems. One Glitch Art technique isDatamoshing, in which artifacts from video compression are purposefully used to add a melting, psychedelic patina and transitions. Greg Neville, Noise series, 2012

  40. ANDREAS GURSKY Gursky uses a bird's-eye view to portray the collective behaviour of large social groups, in the context of a global population of 6 billion people with its mass production and mass entertainment. Gursky's world is big, high-tech, fast-paced, expensive, and global. Within it, the anonymous individual is but one among many. - www.tate.org.uk

  45. GOOGLE ART Google Street View has become a vast resource of imagery, an archive of automated documentary photography. Artists are using it as a subject in itself, exploring the world virtually without ever leaving their own desktop.

  46. DOUG RICKARD A New American Picture Doug Rickard offers a startling and fresh perspective on the genre of American street photography, in the spirit of William Eggleston or Dorothea Lange. All of the images are appropriated from Google Street View. Over two years, Rickard took advantage of its image archive to virtually drive the unseen and overlooked roads of America, bleak places that are forgotten, economically devastated, and abandoned.  Adapted from http://www.aperture.org/shop/doug-rickard-a-new-american-picture-book#.ULwyXyPBHk0
