About DEMAS • Anindependent platformof Czech non-governmentalorganisations (NGOs) • Establishedin 2008 • Thefoundingmembershipcomprises 11 NGOsthathaveover many yearsdemonstratedtheircommitment to the support ofdemocracyassistance, humanrights and civil society in the Czech Republic and abroad • Withintheframeworkof DEMAS, themembersare able to identifytheircommoninterests and values, and co-operate more effectively in achievingthe maximum impact in thefieldofhumanrights

Goals: • Contribute to securing a wide social consensus around the necessity to support democracy and human rights, and defend its place at the heart of the foreign policies of the Czech Republic and the European Union • Support democracy, human rights and civil society wherever they are threatened • Extend a helping hand in countries where democracy and the rule of law fall short of generally accepted standards, and also in countries undergoing the transition to democracy • Facilitate information and know-how exchange among member organisations • Actively co-operate with like-minded organisations in other countries, especially in the EU • Strengthen the effectiveness of Czech transition promotion and democracy assistance

DEMAS aims to be: • Gateway to information about Czech transition promotion and democracyassistance • Platform for co-operation, co-ordination, and information and know-how exchange • Roadmap for practical support of human rights and democracy at home and abroad • Guide to efforts to contribute to the success of projects in support of human rights and democracy

  6. Activities of DEMAS: • Representationof Czech humanrights and democracyassistanceNGOs vis-à-vis Czech and foreignpartners (NGOs, donors, stateinstitutions, politicians, internationalorganisations, and policycentres). • Facilitatingconnectionsbetween Czech and foreignNGOsworking in thefieldsofdemocracyassistance and humanrights. • Promoting Czech human rightsand democracy assistanceactivities in the media and to experts and thewider public.

  7. Organisationofseminars, conferences, workshops and roundtables • Defendingpositions and interestsofmemberorganisation vis-à-vis EU institutions. • Helping to reach a consensusamongthememberorganisations on commonpositionsconcerningthepoliciesofthe CR and the EU towardstransitionpromotion and democracyassistance. • Support memberorganisationsin • fundraising, activelyseekingnew • sourcesoffinancingand opportunities • forinternationalco-operation.

Examples - DEMAS in 2016 • Activeparticipation in HumanRights and Democracy Network (HRDN): sharingmaterials, participation in commonstatements and researches, eg. letter to Mr. Schulz, theheadofEuropeanComission; Do‘s and Dont‘sforEuropeanParliament • ThroughinitiativeMěj se k světu, DEMAS has contributed to commenting on and negotiatingaboutgovernmentstrategicdocument Czech Republic 2030 whichisstating long-term prioritiesforthedevelopmentof Czech Republic

Examples - DEMAS in 2016 • DEMAS wasleading a dialoguewiththestateadministration, politicalparties, general public and others on thetransformationpolicy. • Revisionofcountries to betargetedwithtransformationcooperation, withthe Ministry ofForeignAffairs. • DEMAS providesNewsletterhttp://www.demas.cz/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Zpravodaj-DEMAS-2-2017.pdf , organizes and contributes to seminars, conferences and discussions in the area ofhumanrights, democracy and civil society both in Czech republic and abroad

Funding and structure • Theestablishmentof DEMAS wassupported by the Czech Ministry ofForeignAffairs • Theactivitiesof DEMAS are supportedthroughannualmembershipfees as well as throughexternalgrants • Theactivitiesof DEMAS are determinedindependently and exclusively by thememberorganisations. DEMAS is politically non-partisan, and its actions reflect neither any political or ideological positions nor the interests of any other institution • DEMAS is supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NED - National Endowment for Democracy, Open Society Fund Praha, EEA Grants, International VisegradFund, European Union, European Comission
