  2. CONTENTS • Intelligent Transport System In India • Intelligent Transport System In Europe • Intelligent Transport System In Japan • Intelligent Transport System In Hong Kong • References

  3. INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN INDIA • Area Traffic Control (ATC) System • Smart Cards (RFID) • Electronic Data Processing (EDP) • Traffic Control and Surveillance System

  4. Area Traffic Control (ATC) System • ATC will install sensors at various locations in the city and enable the controllers to have better control over the traffic situation. • From a commuter’s standpoint, he gets a holistic view of the city’s traffic scenario and can plan his journey accordingly. • From a controllers’ point of view, it is easier to manage the traffic efficiently.

  5. Smart Cards (RFID) • Commuters will be able to travel hassle free and in future they will also get timely information about the movement of buses. • BEST has launched smart card services for its commuters. • A common card will be used that will be read by meters at the entrance and exit of a station which will help calculate the fare. This is under development.

  6. Electronic Data Processing (EDP) • BEST started an Electronic Data Processing (EDP) department way back in 1968. • Have applications such as payroll, ticket accounting, daily vehicular returns and financial accounting system.

  7. Traffic Control and Surveillance System • This project will rationalise and optimise the use of signals and will balance the traffic load by making the signals work on the basis of traffic on the route. • CCTV cameras capture video and the streamed content is sent to the traffic control room in real-time. • Variable messaging give updates about the traffic situation ahead and at times used it for creating awareness.

  8. Intelligent Transport System In Europe • Efficient And Comfortable Transport • Traveller Information • Traffic Management • Electronic Pricing And Payment

  9. Efficient And Comfortable Transport • Reduce congestion through better management of demand and capacity will benefit to all road user. • New assistance systems and information services for the driver will make driving more comfortable. • Dynamic traffic management • Navigation systems

  10. Traveller Information • High value for travelers who want to plan or adapt their journey depending on the actual situation. • Improves comfort and efficiency, but also contribute to better safety and less environmental impact. • Traffic Message Channel (TMC)

  11. Traffic Management • Provides guidance to the travellers and haulier on the condition of the road network. • Detects incidents and emergencies, implement response strategies to ensure safe and efficient use of the road network.

  12. Electronic Pricing And Payment • Electronic Fee Collection (EFC) systems • European Electronic Toll Service (EETS)

  13. Intelligent Transport System In Japan • Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) • .Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) • Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS) • HelpnetTM (Emergency Call System)

  14. Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) • Digital data communication system that provides the latest necessary road traffic information to drivers via car navigation equipment regularly. • Uses advanced communications technologies to broadcast, collect and transmit information on road traffic conditions.

  15. Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) • Aims to alleviation traffic congestion near tollgates, a better convenience for drivers by eliminating the need to handle cash and the reduction of management costs. • How it works:

  16. Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS) • Traffic control systems on surface roads were introduced in traffic control centres operated by the Prefectural Police Headquarters. • The traffic control system has three main functions: collection, processing and presentation.

  17. HelpnetTM (Emergency Call System) • is a service operating in Japan in the event of an emergency involving an automobile enables the communication (automatic or manual) of the vehicle’s registration data and current location to be transmitted to the service’s operations centre.

  18. Intelligent Transport System In Hong Kong • Traffic Control and Surveillance System • Automatic Toll • Journey Time Indication System • Traffic Control Centre (TCC)

  19. Traffic Control and Surveillance System • Road tunnels and the Tsing Ma Control Area have been equipped with Traffic Control and Surveillance facilities to ensure efficient and effective traffic and incident management. • Traffic Control and Surveillance System has been expanded in the recent years.

  20. Automatic Toll • Alternative payment method to the public • Extended to all road tunnels and the Tsing Ma Control Area

  21. Journey Time Indication System • Introduced in year 2003. • Provides the estimated journey time to exit of respective tunnels from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon. • Assists motorists to make an informed route choice to cross the harbour before arriving at the critical diversion points

  22. Traffic Control Centre (TCC) • Provides accommodation for the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre,Area Traffic Control System, Traffic monitoring system and Traffic Control and Surveillance System
