Syrups Definition and Uses : Syrups are sweet, viscous, nearly saturated aqueous solutions of sucrose. Syrups containing medicinal substances are called medicated syrups and those containing flavoring agents are called flavored syrups. Syrup is mainly used as a vehicle, sweetening agent or flavored sweetening base to mask bitter and saline taste in oral liquids.
Some points related to Syrups …… Action: Syrups are used with the combination of drug given to the patient so as the drug does not seem bitter, pungent,or sour in taste. Example : There are two types of syrups Flavored syrups and Artificial syrups (both are type of medicated syrups ). Medicated syrups : This syrups give different outcomes and are used as Analgesics (Gives antipyretic effect) , Anticholinergics ( used for treatment of peptic ulcers) , also used as Antiviral syrups ( for prevention of Infections) . Flavored syrups contain lemon syrups ,orange syrups etc. Artificial syrups are sugar based syrups which rise the blood sugar level.
Patient Counselling If the patient does not have a background of Diabetes or Hyperglycemia then the patient has no harm form using the syrups which contains sugar in it. But if the patient has high blood sugar levels and consumes the sugar containing syrups then he or she might face a lot of problems due to high blood sugar level such as damage the vessels that supply blood to vital organs which can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke , kidney disease ,vision problems and nerve problems.
Continued The patient having normal blood sugar level less than 140mg/dL and are consuming the sugar containing syrups then there is no harm for them. Patient having an exceeding value of blood sugar level of more than 200mg/dL then the patient might experience physical difficulty such as nausea , vomiting , fatigue , frequent urination , stomach pains etc . The patient must take a proper guidelines for use of the syrups with the proper dosage , and at proper time interval for a proper action of the medicament. Patients having difficulty for swallowing tablets are recommended to use syrups . Patient are guided to use the bottles of syrups by shaking it well before the use .
