ARTERIES • Carries blood away form the heart. • Is made of a thick muscular wall to maintain high oxygen levels of blood coming from the heart. • As the heart beats the blood is getting pumped through the arteries at high pressure. • A PULSE BEAT can be found in the artery. • The pulse proves blood is being continuously pumped through the arteries.

  3. ROLES OF VESSELS ASSOCIATED WITH HEART

  4. VEINS • Carries blood to the heart. • Thinner muscular wall as it carries deoxygenated blood to the heart at a lower pressure. • The central cavity of the vein is much wider than the arteries. • Reduces resistance to the flow of blood along the vein. • Valves are present to PREVENT BACKFLOW.

CAPILLARIES • CAPILLARIES are blood vessels that connect arteries to veins which allows exchange of materials between blood and cells of the body. • Each artery branches into smaller and smaller vessels called arterioles. • Each vein is formed from the convergence of many tiny venules. • Blood passes from arterioles to venules via a dense network of tiny microscopic vessels called capillaries. • Capilleries are the most numerous vessels in the body. • They are referred to as exchange vessels • They exchange materials between blood and living tissues this takes place through their thin walls (one cell thick).

The circulatory system • Pulmonary – Lungs • Coronary – Heart • Hepatic – Liver • Mesenteric – Gut • Renal – Kidneys • Arteries take blood away from the heart and take oxygen to the rest of the body. • Veins take blood to the heart. • Oxygenated blood is carried by the arteries and pulmonaryvein. • Deoxygenated blood is carried by veins and the pulmonaryartery.

  8. Coronary Artery Disease • Coronary Artery Disease is caused by the build-up of plaque in your arteries. The arteries go from being smooth and elastic to being narrow and rigid, which will restrict blood flow to the heart. Red blood cells get stuck which will starve the heart of oxygen cause it to not pump properly. This heightens the risk of suffering from strokes and heart attacks.
