Overview • Went from heavy to light • Focused around temples • Architects created impressive exteriors because commoners were not allowed to go inside the temples • Definite systems of construction called the “orders” • Orders • Doric-Plain (on mainland) • Ionic- More decorative (evolved in the islands and the coast) • Corinthian- Very ellaborate (Hellesnistic era and later in Roman times)

Orders • Orders followed specific rules for construction based on proportions • In each order, the columns get more ornate • most basic difference among the orders has to do with proportions (Doric columns, for example, being thicker and shorter, Ionic columns taller and slimmer) • the orders may be distinguished most easily by their capitals (the tops of the columns).

The Parthenon • Architects-Iktinos and Kallikrates • 448-432 BCE • The Acropolis, Athens • -Sculptor ,Pheidias, made the massive cult statue of the goddess • -in honor of patron goddess Athena • Culmination of Doric order • consists of a rectangular floor plan with a series of low steps on every side, and a colonnade (8 x 17) of Doric columns • -proportions have been carefully • readjusted all of which help give a feeling of harmony, balance, and unity. • -Columns lean slightly inward, corner columns are closer to their neighbors than the rest

  5. -originally many areas were painted • -the cella contained a huge statue of Athena • -once used as a treasury, Christian church, and then a Mosque • -Damaged by ammunition by the Ottomans • -Democracy created public buildings being built instead of large palaces (all men considered equal)
