  1. Book p.30 Unit 8 What Was It Like Then?

  2. Life in the old days John wants to know what life was in the past. He asks Grandpa some questions. What was it like in the old days, Grandpa? What was if like for you then? Did you watch TV? Did you have a computer? Book p.30

  3. Book p.30 Grandpa tells him that life was very different. Many children did not go to school because many people then were poor. Children today are lucky. They can all go to school. Hong Kong is much cleaner now. When I was a boy, it was not so clean. In the old days, we did not have computers or television sets. Now, most people have computers and television sets in their homes.

  4. Book p.31 There were very few tall buildings then. Now you can see many tall buildings in Hong Kong. A lot of people live in flats now. In the past, many people lived in shophouses or wooden huts.Look at this photograph. This is what was like then.

  5. Linda asks Grandma what life was like in the past.What was it like in the old days, Grandma?Were you just like us?Did you fly in an aeroplane?Did you ride in a car?Did you go to school by bus? Book p.31

  6. Grandma tells Linda about her childhood.When I was young, I wanted to school but I could not.In those days, more boys than girls went to school. I helped my mother at home. I did not learn how to read . But I learnt how to cook, sew and look after babies. Book p.31

  7. Now, there are many places for children to visit. They can go to Victoria Peak, Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean park.There were many children in my family. We lived with our grandparents. Now, most people have small families. Book p.32

  8. Grandpa shows John a photograph of his old house. Book p.33 . Which one is your house, Grandpa? My house is the one between the two green houses. Whose fruit trees were beside your house, Grandpa? Those fruit trees belonged to my family.

  9. Who is this girl standing under the tree, Grandpa? Book p.33 She was my neighbour. Why did they build a bridge behind your house, Grandpa? It was built so that people could get to the other side of the stream.

  10. Book p.34 How did you spend your free time, Grandpa? My brother and I used to swim in the stream whenever we were free. Where did you wait for the bus to go to school, Grandpa? Well, the bus used to travel along the road in front of my house. So, we used to wait for the bus along the road.

  11. Book p.34 Which We use ‘which’ to ask about the exact person, object or place. Whose We use ‘whose’ to find out who the owner of something is. Who We use ‘who’ to ask questions about people. Why We use ‘why’ to seek the reasons for something. Where We use ‘where’ to ask questions about the place something is or happens. How We use ‘how’ to ask about the way in which something happens.

  12. John is talking to his grandfather and his grandfather’s friends. He wants to know more about what life was like when they were young. Book p.36 What did you do when you were young? We worked very hard. We swam in the stream. We helped our fathers with their work.

  13. We madeour own toys and played with them Book p.37 We grew our own vegetables. We walked or cycled everywhere. We kept our own chickens and ducks.

  14. Linda wants to know what her grandmother and her grandmother’s friends did when they were young. Book p.37 What did you do when you were young? We stayed at home most of the time. We helped to look after our brothers and sisters. We sewed our own clothes.

  15. Book p.37 We played simple games. We planted our own vegetables and fruits. We cooked for our families. We made our own dolls.

  16. John wants to find out what his grandfather’s friend, Mr Chan, did when he was young. He asks Mr. Lam in a interview. Book p.38 I was very fortunate because my parents could afford to send me to school. Hi, Mr. Chan! Could you tell me more about your childhood? I went to a school in the city because there wasn’t a school in my village. Which school did you go to? I cycled to school! It took me two hours to get there! But I didn’t mind because I loved school. How did you get there? Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me. It was a pleasure to help. It brought back happy memories.

  17. “This is my album,” said John. “I have pasted photographs of all the important events in my life in the order in which they happened.” Book p.41 The Album of My Life I was born in 1995. I learn to walk in 1997. I started school in 2001. I won a 100-metre race in 2002.
