  2. Questions and Answers • Where is the hormone produced? What are the target organs/structures of the hormone? Parathyroid- parathyroid glands increase the level of calcium in the blood. Calcitonin- thyroid glands decrease the level of calcium in the blood. Calcitriol- regulates the body levels of calcium and phosphorus. • How is the secretion of the hormone regulated/controlled? Parathyroid- from the negative feedback of calcium levels in the blood to the parathyroid glands. Calcitonin- calcium increases, secreted when in higher qualities. When calcium decreases so does the calcitonin. Calcitriol- homeostasis

  3. What is the normal function of the hormone? How does the hormone contribute to homeostasis? Parathyroid- regulate calcium levels in the blood and within the bones.( regulates fetal-placental minerals in homeostasis) Calcitonin- biological function in humans is unclear. ( a minor role in regulating blood concentrations of calcium) Calcitriol- increases the uptake on dietary calcium into the blood, also the uptake of calcium into the bones. ( is an important control point in homeostasis) • What are the causes and symptoms of hyper secretion of the hormone? What diseases result from this condition? Parathyroid- most parathyroid causes occur because one parathyroid gland develops into a benign parathyroid tumor, also from longtime use of lithium. The excess of calcium which is another cause gives symptoms affecting your brain, bones, muscles, kidney, heart and more. Parkinsons and carcinoma, kidney diseases can occur from certain symptoms. Calcitonin- is caused by the proteorytic cleavage of a larger prepropetide. Symptoms are feeling dizzy, low blood pressure, fever, chills. Diseases that can occur are Paget’s disease of bane and thyroid disease. Calcitriol- some of the possible common medical causes of Hyper section of growth hormone may include gigantism and pituitary tumors. Symptoms are hyper section of growth hormone and limb symptoms, growth symptoms, and sexual symptoms.

  4. What are the treatments for under or over activation of the hormone pathway? Parathyroid- treatments of this hormone can include radiation therapy, a surgery made to fit your needs. Performed by MD Anderson surgeons. Calcitonin- treatments are drinking enough fluids, being active, dieting, controlling nausea or vomiting. Calcitriol- treatments are basically long-term therapy. • How , if at all, is the hormone used clinical or commercially? Parathyroid- is used commercially and clinically by studying the same samples from normal controls and different patient groups and assays using commercially available reagents. Calcitonin- calcitonin is used in clinical uses of commercially available assays. These assays use antibodies that blind to calcitonin. Calcitriol- clinical development of calcitriol for cancer treatment. There is commercially available calcitriol formulation used in trials.
