Dual Presentation-Thinking Games Hotel Dusk: Room 215 Professor Layton and the Curious Village By: Katie Lawton
What are these two games? • Both are DS games • Hotel Dusk is a mystery game (‘adventure’) • Professor Layton is a puzzle game • Both are for a thinking group • Somewhat similar
Who made them? • Hotel Dusk: Cing • Professor Layton: Level-5
Hotel Dusk Explanation • You play as Kyle Hyde, who is a former detective that is searching for his missing partner • The hotel he arrives in seems linked to his partner, and is full of many mysteries • You work to unravel said mysteries
How does it play? • The touch screen is made use of, and some of the puzzles have strange methods of solving (such as closing the DS) • The small cast is very well developed, with nobody being left out • You search rooms and interrogate others
Characters • Kyle Hyde • Mila • Dunning Smith
Professor Layton Explanation • You play as Professor Layton, who travels with his apprentice Luke to solve an inheritance case • The strange village you arrive in has people who throw out puzzles for you to solve • You focus on trying to solve several mysteries at once (ten are marked down in all)
How does it play? • You navigate using the touch screen and use it in various ways to solve puzzles • Puzzles are the only interaction you get with the game, but there are many, and they are not repetitive (the closest is five similar ones)
Characters • Professor Layton • Luke • Flora
Any problems? • Hotel Dusk has a few moments where it might be frustrating to proceed • Professor Layton contains a few ridiculous puzzles, but hints usually help with these • Both are short
Worth buying? • If you love story and characterization, go with Hotel Dusk • Not as well-developed in story, but with a cast of charming characters, Professor Layton also appeals-the puzzles are brilliant for thinkers! • Due to length, you might want to wait for a price drop, but be careful-they are somewhat hard to find even now
