  11. The answer = Living Labs • In-house real-life lab facilities • MIT Labs, Philips HomeLab • City lab facilities • Helsinki Virtual Village, i-City Hasselt 11

  12. Living Labs in Europe • European Network of Living Labs • Best-of-class in Europe and beyond (20->50->130) • Mobile City Bremen, Amsterdam Living Lab, IBBT iLab.o • Snowpolis, La Fabrique du Futur, Telemedicine Lab 12

  13. Key = Open Innovation platforms • International Benchmark • Structural approach needed • Extend Living Lab approach to involve all stakeholders Ballon, Pierson & Delaere, 2005

  14. Living Labs: user-centric innovation • What?Create a research environment to investigate large groups of users over a longer period within their natural ‘use context’ in interaction with innovations. • Why?“because we are not getting close enough to the user”. • too much single moments or short periods of user feedback or • too often tested on a too limited scale or • too much ‘un-natural’ lab-environments, not accounting for contextual factors, social factors, and factors that are difficult to grasp by means of single moment feedback moments… • Research too often limited to the technology/application ‘an sich’, without taking the ‘global picture’ of the ‘value chain’ into account ….

  15. Living Labs • Rationale? support the development and commercialisation of innovations as user-centric as possible. Fostering reliable and mature innovations by supporting: • concept selection • innovation development • choice of the right business model • the right pricing & communication • the tailoring of your offer to its market potential
