  1. El presente progresivo Capítulo 8.2 Vamos de compras

  2. What is the present progressive • Present progressive is used to say what is happening right now. • It is made up of 2 verbs: • Estar + another verb in the present participle form.

  3. Forming the present progressive • Start with a form of the verb estar: estoy estamos estás estáis está están • Use another verb (for what is being done) and put it in the present participle: • For AR verbs, drop the AR & add –ando • For IR/ER verbs, drop IR or ER & add -iendo

  4. Ejemplos… • I am running • First, start with a form of estar. • ESTOY • Then, use the verb ‘correr’ and put it in the present participle • CORRER  CORR  CORRIENDO • ESTOY CORRIENDO

  5. ¿Como se dice…? • You are talking. (hablar) • Estás hablando. • We are eating. (comer) • Estamos comiendo. • Marta is singing. (cantar) • Marta está cantando. • You all are calling. (llamar) • Estáis llamando. • They are opening presents. (abrir) • Están abriendo regalos.

  6. Irregular progessive endings… • RULE #1 • When the stem of either an -IR or -ER verb ends in a vowel (leer), you will change the “i” (of –iendo) to a y • “Estoy leyendo”, not “estoy leiendo”.

  7. Irregular verbs… • RULE #2 • Some IR vebs have stem changes in the present tense. Dormir = duermo • For verbs like these, a stem change also happens in the present progressive. • O  U • E  I • Dormir  durmiendo (sleeping) • Servir  sirviendo (serving)

  8. Other things to know… • Do not use “ir” or “venir” with present progressive. • Yo vengo a la fiesta = I’m coming to the party. • Ella va a la fiesta = She is going to the party.
