  1. The Catcher in the Rye Book Cover Writing Assignment (Major Grade) Due Tuesday 6/11

  2. Assignment Examine the book covers on the following slides. Decide which one you believe best represents the themes and issues raised in the novel. Then develop a 1-2 page typed (double-spaced) response where you analyze WHY this is the best cover.

  3. Begin with a clear topic sentence that states why this cover best represents the novel. Be sure to be clear WHICH cover you are discussing (briefly describe it). Then, provide AT LEAST two distinct quotations from the text that support this opinion. Citations need to be included. Be sure to really analyze and discuss the quotations and examples in support of the topic sentence.

  4. A few tips… • If you are writing about a specific symbol, don’t feel that you need to only focus on quotes that talk directly about the symbol. You can use evidence from anywhere in the book, in addition to quotes about the symbol. • Feel free to use more than two quotes to really show development of a character, symbol, or theme. • Your response should show your understanding of plot and thematic issues raised in the text.

  5. Develop a logical organization. • Although this is analytical writing, you can say “I,” “me,” “you,” etc. • Be sure to carefully proofread and revise your work. Grammar and spelling will count!
