  4. UGLY FEET There is a small town in Ireland called Limerick. There lives Tadhg, a tailor. He is tall, strong and very, very ugly. He has got a few short hairs, ears asbig as an elephant’s and sharp dirty teeth. His feet are ugly with long dirty toenails.

  5. People always make fun of Tadhg: "Who's got the ugliest feet, Tadhg?" the children shout. "Tadhg, cover your feet, please!" shout the adults in town. But Tadhg doesn’t care about what people say.

  6. During the night, there is a party in Shannon’s house. Shannon is a famous Irish harpist. She is short, thin and very, very clean. She has got long wavy hair.

  7. People are dancing and singing. Tadhg sits down on the chair with one leg stretched out in front of him and his feet are on top of the table. Shannon passes by the table with a plate of cakes.

  8. She looks at Tadhg’s foot and says:"By my father's bones, that is one ugly foot!" wrinkling up her nose. "By your father's bones, there is an uglier foot than that in this room!" replies Tadhg. Shannon thinks that he is talking about her. So, she says: "You know, the ugliest foot is your own foot, sitting in front of yourself".

  9. "Would you like to place a bet on that?" asks Tadhg."I would indeed" says Shannon. "Then if I can find an uglier foot than this one, you must play me your best song. If I can't, then I will make you a pretty dress" replies Tadhg. "That is a good bet, and I accept," says the woman. Tadhg and the woman shake hands on it.

  10. At that point, Tadhg stretches out his other foot. It’s much uglier than his first foot. This foot is smelly and horrible. It has long, sharp toenails. The toes are strange and twisted.

  11. "Ugh!" exclaims the woman. "There is nothing in the world uglier than that foot. You win, and I will play you the best song I can tomorrow.“Tadhg smiles. He knows the woman is the best harpist in Ireland.

  12. "Thank you," says Tadhg. "I will see you tomorrow then. And I promise… What does Tadhg promise Shannon?
