  1. Leonardo Da Vinci Taylor Weiss

  2. Bio • Born the illegitimate child of a Tuscan notary on April 15,1442 • Became an apprentice of Verrocchio at 17 • Lorenzo de ’Medici was a major patron of Leonardo’s • Commissioned The Last Supper • Worked in Milan from 1482 to 1499 • In 1516, he traveled to France and joined the royal court • Leonardo died on May 2, 1519 in the king’s chateau at Cloux. • Was considered a Renaissance Man: PAINTER, INVENTOR, SCIENTIST • Created a small amount of works due to his experimentation with technique as well as his procrastination

  3. Louvre Virgin of the Rocks National Gallery (London)

  4. Virgin of the Rocks, Oil on Panel • Two versions of the painting exist: one in the Louvre that was painted between 1483 and 1486, and one in National Gallery (London) painted between 1491-1508 • Both were painted in Milan • Mary, instead of being on a throne, the style at the time, she was painted on the ground (Madonna of Humility). Her right arm is around the infant St. John while her hand is over her son, Christ as a sign of protection. Christ is blessing St. John and an angel is pointing at St. John • First painting of high renaissance that abandoned the use of halos • Indicated divinity by giving figures ideal beauty and grace • Grouped figures together within shape of pyramid (pyramid creates an illusion of space) as well as painted the figures gesturing at each other and looking at each other • Serves to unify composition

  5. Last Supper, 1498, tempera and oil on plaster (Santa Maria della Grazie, Milan) • Scene depicts the Passover Seder held by Christ with his 12 Apostles • Each Apostle is recognized through attributes • Judas carries purse-> money he received for betraying Christ • Judas is the only figure to be in shadow • Twelve Apostles are separated into four groups of three (Trinity) • Leonardo used geometry to create a balanced, perfect image (Greeks used Geometry to show Heavenly Perfection)-> Neo-Platonism • The Fresco is in terrible condition. Since it was painted on dry plaster, the humidity affected it easier, leaving it to deteriorate. Pollution as well as other conditions have affected the fresco negatively.

  6. Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa, c. 1503-05, oil on panel 30-1/4 x 21 inches (Musée du Louvre)" • Portrait of a wealthy Florentine merchant’s wife • Half length view, hands quietly folded, and she faces the viewer • Well known for her smile->consequence of his fascination and skill with chiaroscuro and atmospheric perspective • used his characteristic sfumato (smokey haziness)-> softens outlines and creates an atmospheric effect around the figure • Never delivered to patron but was carried with him to the court of Francis I of France

  7. The Vitruvian Man c.1490 • Study of anatomical proportions of humans • Based on ancient Greek architect Vitruvius’s beliefs that circles and squares represented the perfect geometrical units and could be used to create ideal spaces • An excerpt of Vitruvius is translated above and below the drawing • Blend of art and science • Pen and ink on Paper

  8. The Fetus and Lining of the Uterus c.1511-13 • Study of a human fetus and the Uterus->anatomical study • Not completely accurate (made uterus’s shape a sphere, and characterization of line is incorrect) • Aided in the development of anatomy as a science
