  2. Basic Information Son of ZUES and HERA. • Born in the city of Thrace. • The God MARS in Roman Mythology is similar but has personality differences. • His sacred bird is the VULTURE. • Enemy: Athena. (differences) • Symbol: Spear

  3. Reputation • Known as a bad god. • "You are to me the most hateful of the gods.... For dear to you always are strife and wars and battles.“ • Zues said this to Ares in the Illiad • Others worship him for giving them courage and helping them to be bold. • Had few temples and places of worship because many feared starting a war by visiting these places.

  4. Family • Sister: Eris (Goddess of Discord) • Friend: Enyo (Goddess of War) • Daughter: Alkippe • Sons: Phobos (Fear) & Deimos (Terror) (Ares & Aphrodite) Other children with Aphrodite: Eros, Harmonia, Adrestra, Anteros, Arethousa, Himerosand Cycnus (the most dangerous). Eris ^

  6. The rape of Alkippe • Poseidon’s son raped Ares’ daughter. • Ares killed him. • The trial occurred on a hill out side of Athens. • When he won, the hill was known as Ares’ Hill.

  7. Love for Aphrodite • Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus but was unfaithful. • Ares loved Aphrodite • Aphrodite loved Adonis • Disguised as a boar, Ares killed Adonis out of jealousy

  8. Revenge • The King of Thebes, Cadmus, killed the Drakon that protected Ares’ sacred spring. • Cadmus was forced to serve Ares for eight years. • He then married Ares’ daughter Harmonia. • After they had multiple children, Ares turned the king and his wife into snakes.

  9. Trojan War • Ares favored the Trojans. HOWEVER, he cared very little about the cause of the war. • War was enjoyable for him no matter what the cause. • He picked the Trojans after Aphrodite persuaded him. • Athena then injured him with a boulder.
