  1. Welcome to your new laptop! Courtesy of Mary Morris, Chaparral MS

  2. Never eat or drink around your laptop. Aw, man! Don’t eat or drink at your laptop. Liquids and small bits of food can damage the keyboard, and even stop your computer from working. Cost to replace system board: $400.* Cost to replace keyboard: $200.* *Prices for repair or replacement are estimates only.

  3. Always use a carrying case for your laptop. Treat your laptop like it’s a piece of glass. Drop it, and it WILL break, even in a carrying case or backpack. Act as if your carrying case or backpack is hauling something fragile—don’t drop, toss, or put too much pressure on it. A carrying case is best. Otherwise, make sure you use a backpack with a padded area just for a laptop. Cost to fix your laptop if you drop it: $500* *Prices for repair or replacement are estimates only.

  4. Be nice to your keyboard. Do not attempt to remove keys here. Do not smash keys here. Do not sit here. Want to chat with UR BFFL? Need to write your History essay? Don’t pop the keys off your keyboard…or slam your fingers down hard as you type…or push down on the keyboard. Do these things (or worse), and you’ll need a new keyboard. OMG! Cost for a new keyboard: $200*. *Prices for repair or replacement are estimates only.

  5. Never open your laptop past its limit. Oops! Open your laptop too far and the hinges that hold it together can snap apart. This can also crack the screen. Cost for a new screen or hinge: $400* *Prices for repair or replacement are estimates only.

  6. Never pick up the laptop by the screen. Oh no! Carry the laptop by the screen and the screen and hinges can break. The laptop could drop and cause a lot of damage. You could lose all of your music and pictures. Oh, and you could lose your homework, too. Cost to fix computer after dropping it: $300 - $500.

  7. Be careful of cords, cables, and ports. Plug or unplug cables and cords the wrong way—push, yank, or trip over them—and you’ll bend the ports (where you plug things in) so much you can’t use them. Cost to fix a bent port: $400* *Prices for repair or replacement are estimates only.

  8. Do not abuse your laptop. Common sense really is best when it comes to your laptop. Laptops are breakable. If it breaks, you may lose all the stuff you have on it—for school and for fun. If it breaks, it will cost A LOT of money to fix.Treat your laptop nicely, and it’ll be nice to you.

  9. CLEANING • Never use ANYTHING other than a dry, cotton cloth to clean your computer screen.

  10. Power OFF! • Always make sure that your laptop is shut-down and POWERED OFF when you take it home at the end of the day.

  11. How should you care and handle your laptop? Can you think of more ways to care and handle your laptop? Share your thoughts with the class.
