Counseling Services Mission~ • to provide students with counseling services that enable them to cope with personal problems that could impede successful academic performance • to make available to students vocational/academic assessment and counseling to facilitate their choice of an academic major • to provide a professionalresponse to students in emotional crisis • to provide evaluationof medical and psychological reasons for requests for late course drops and withdrawal from the University and to consult with the Associate Deans on such cases • to provide consultation services to the colleges and administration of the university on situations involving students with psychological problems • to be a training resource for area counseling and psychology graduate programs

International Association of Counseling Services The Accreditation Association for University and College Counseling Services • NCSU Counseling Center is one of nine International Association of Counseling Centers(IACS) accredited centers in North Carolina. • Accreditation was initially granted in 2010 and has continued without interruption. • The Counseling Center has existed at NCSU since 1956 with its services evolving to meet the needs of the evolving student population.

Health Services Patient Satisfaction American College Health Association (ACHA) Patient Satisfaction Survey 2011 • Overall patient satisfaction = 88% (Very Good/Good) • Likely to recommend SHS to other students = 94% (Very Good/Good) • Friendliness, courtesy, and helpfulness of staff assisting provider = 96% (Very Good/Good) • Amount of time spent with provider = 94% (Very Good/Good) • Quality of information and explanations provided by provider relative to visit = 91% (Very Good/Good)

Counseling Services Satisfaction2012 Client Survey • 78.9% of students reported being either extremely or very satisfied with Counseling Center services. • 78.8% of students surveyed indicated that the counseling services I received will, directly or indirectly, assist me with reaching my academic goals • 97.3% of students reported being either extremely or very satisfied with Group Counseling services. • Students identified counseling as playing a significant role in: -Identifying solutions and resources to cope with problems -Increasing self-understanding -Reaching academic goals • Most frequently cited complaint was the wait for an appointment

  13. 2011-2012 New Health Services Implemented • Added Dietitian services to meet needs of students with nutritional imbalance and eating disorder concerns • Courtesy filing for majority of health insurance plans to meet the request of students and parents • Orthopedic Specialty services provided on site to serve higher acuity soft tissue and skeletal injuries • Gastroenterology Specialty services provided on site for student concerns – many conditions are a result of stress in this age population

  14. 2011-2012New Counseling Services Implemented • Position restructured for risk evaluation and behavioral intervention to better manage high-risk students. • Expansion of psychiatric services to better address increasing complexity and severity of student needs. • QPR – Suicide Prevention Program aimed at training students, faculty and staff to help distressed students access additional support or find professional help.

  16. 2011-2012 Cost Savings Annual Savings: • Renegotiated housekeeping contract = $80,000 • Changed nurse triage vendor = $9,000 • Changed record storage vendor = $2,000* • Reclassified NP position = $21,192 TOTAL SAVINGS = $112,192 NOTE: Due to low utilization and significant operational expense, with student approval, we also adjusted SHS hours and reallocated resources to the day shift. * Need to re-examine needs of counseling department

Repurposed Savings For: • Computers (laptops), printers, scanners & card swipes • Continuing Medical Education(provider travel) • Vital Signs machines($1000 each) • EMR contract ($8,000) maintenance • Replaced liquid nitrogen tank • Outreach and Marketing (orientation video, revamped website and updated marketing materials)

  18. Demand is on the Rise Counseling Physical Therapy Over 2,000 appointments each year. Over 20,000 appointments each year.

  19. 2012-2013 Fee Increase Last year a $10 fee increase was approved for this year FY 12-13 and is being used to increase services and greater access to care through the hiring of: • 350 Additional Psychiatry Hours for Counseling Services • 9 month Pharmacist • 9 month Administrative AssistantPharmacy • 9 month Laboratory Technician

  21. 2013-14 Health Fee Request This year we are requesting the University Health Committee endorse a2013-14 health fee increase to maintain current services and provide for additional services thus improving access to and care ofour growing student population. Student Health and Counseling Services are requesting a fee increase of 3.5% from $268 to $277 to support these efforts during 2013-2014.

Impact to Students if not approved As enrollment has increased SHS has experienced an increased demand for services and appointments. • Students will experience longer wait times for all services. • Access to Counseling Services will be decreased . • Access to Physical Therapy appointments will be decreased . • Increase in user charges and/or reduction in services.

Looking Forward….Health Services • Increase services for soft tissue and skeletal injuries - Sports Medicine MD/Clinic • Expansion of Services for Eating Disorder patients • Collaboration with Campus Partners for satellite clinic • Dermatology Services – strong demand • Men’s Health Clinic • Increase diversify of professional staff • Third-party Insurance billing – develop infrastructure

Looking Forward…Counseling Services • Establish liaisons with key stakeholders on campus including academic departments, Greek life, diversity groups and veterans affairs to better meet the needs of the population. • Expand training program to contribute to the development of counselors, social workers and psychologists. • Continue to reach out to students through effective outreach programming, especially to vulnerable populations. • Expand group counseling options to help manage increasing demand for services while still providing effective interventions. • Continue to hire counselors with specialized experience and expertise.
