  1. Status of the LHC ProjectLuciano MAIANI CERN Council June 21, 2002

  2. 1. LHC progress since October 2001 • Contract for Cryogenic line: • adjudicated (Nov. 2001) • Signed • Super-conducting cable production: • Reviewed by external Panel in Feb. 2002 (all firms interviewed) • New production schedule defined and agreed • Contracts for the assembly of the main dipoles: • Adjudicated ( Dec. 2001) • Defined and signed • Civil engineering works • steadily progressing • Hand-over dates of the caverns to experimental Collaborations confirmed (ATLAS: April 2003, CMS: July 2004) • LHC schedule redefined according to signed contracts • Agreement on M&O costs reached with Funding Agencies LHC Status

  3. LHC Schedule • We are very unhappy that the 2006 schedule could not be held; • Definite damage for many physicists and students around the world; • New schedule is based on official dates in the contracts of the main industrial items, with some reasonable (but not so large) time contingency; • Schedule determined by technical rather than financial constraints; • Makes possible an overall affordable scheme, for both machine and detectors. LHC Status

  4. LHC Cost to Completion • We confirm the Cost to Completion given in 2001; • A contingency >100M is included in the Medium Term Plan; • The analysis of Manpower, in the framework of new schedule, savings etc. is in progress • Attribution of (36) Work Packages to specific groups, responsible towards LHC/CERN Management has been going on and is now almost completed • Earned value accounting, FI updated contract follow up are being implemented. 10. Number of dipole UL's delivered to CERN per month (1 dipole is 4 UL-1 + 4 UL-2) LHC Status

  11. Super Conducting cable, last concerns • Breakage of one cabling machine has been announced early this week; 3-4 months to repair; • CERN has ordered one cabling machine as backup, but it will come into operation in spring 2003 only; • We shall ask companies to continue with strand production and use our stored capacity to provide sc cables for dipole cold mass production. 20. Earned Value Accounting • We need to know • Planned (target) cost at a date (PC) • Real cost at a date (RC) • Earned value at a date (EV) • Cost variance: EV-RC • Schedule variance: EV-PC • Real problem: determine EV • Break up of work packages into many, small, work units, RC and EV updated weekly! • Software by AS Division • Implementation for LHC machine&areas: December 2002 (a hard job, but worth the effort) LHC Status
