  1. Getting customers online is quite simple. But why is it so damn difficult for most small business people who can’t hire digital marketing specialists to assist them with their online marketing? The reason is simple. Most businesses trying to get customers online focus their energies on things that are not very important when you are just starting out. E.g. the colour combinations on their website, logo design, creating social media accounts, etc. Truth is, while all these may be important at some point in future, if you are a small business owner whose main concern is getting customers online, your priority should be on ensuring that you are in line with the points I’m going to enumerate below. If you don’t focus your maximum energy on the few tips I’m going to share with you shortly, it’d be almost impossible for you to be getting customers online on regular basis via the internet. Point No.1: Offer Valuable Content on your website The first thing you must focus on is offering enough valuable content on your website that can proffer quality solution to real-life problems faced by your potential customers. The emphasis is on the words “enough” and “quality”. Let me burst your bubble a little – There is virtually no information you want to put online that does not exist in some form already. Your responsibility is to offer similar information in a better way than any other person you know both online and offline.

  2. Truth is, you can’t put up every information on your website homepage or service pages. Therefore, the best or easiest way to have enough and quality content for your potential customers is to start a blog. Point No. 2: Focus on Creating Visibility for your Website What is the use of having a website that nobody visits or knows about? Your primary focus should be to ensure that your website, social media pages etc. get as much visibility as possible. The best way to achieve this is to do aggressive Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Social Media Marketing. Why search engine (like Google) is the best avenue for getting customers online is because the kind of customers you get are those who are already in need of what you are offering. They are searching for a solution to a problem and all you have to do is present yourself to them. E.g. only someone who is interested in having a website will go online to search for terms like “Best website designers in Lagos”. It’s almost impossible that you will have someone randomly come online to search for specific phrases like that. Also, social media is a very good avenue to create visibility for your brand name. But a word of caution, don’t hard-sell social media users. They are online to have fun not to buy stuff. Point No.3: Optimize Your Website’s Conversion Rate Optimization Now, if you are thinking of getting customers online (especially through your website) you have to optimize your website to be able to convert casual cold visitors to paying customers or warm leads. The best way to do this is to ensure that it is as easy as possible for potential customers who come to your website to get in touch with you. This means having multiple data capturing forms (like quotation request form, contact us form etc). People find filling these simple forms a lot easier than copying your email address from your web page and then visit Gmail/yahoo to send you an email. Also, the phone number on your website should be configured to click-to-call. Nobody has the time to start copying your phone number. A rule of thumb is – your site visitors must not click more than 2 pages to access any information on your website. Period! The whole idea is to make getting in touch with you as easy as possible for your potential clients. Point No.4: Avoid Negligence More customers have been lost by small and medium scale business people online through negligence than any other point I have raised above. Getting customers online is a game of speed. The faster you are at responding to inquiries, the higher your chances of closing the deal with your potential clients.

  3. I have a lot of web design clients who, for years, never check their official emails (e.g. info@companyname.com) which is listed on the contact page of their website. What this means is that a lot of potential clients try to get in touch with their business to no avail. Some leave outdated phone numbers that are no longer in use. Some others just allow their website to become obsolete and appear non-trustworthy. To avoid a scenario such as this, you have to hire a web designer to manage your website for you on a daily basis so that you can concentrate on the core aspects of your business. Finally, if you take these above points seriously, there is no doubt that you will end up getting more customers online and taking your business to the next level.
