  3. John F. Kennedy • Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, JFK became our Nations youngest President. • "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country.“ • He was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas

  4. Political leader of the Decade • Johnson was born on August 27, 1908, in central Texas. • In the 1960 campaign, Johnson, as John F. Kennedy's running mate, was elected Vice President. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in as President.

  5. Fads of the decade • Mattel introduced the Barbie Doll in 1960. • Hasbro followed the fad shortly thereafter by creating G.I. Joe, the first action figure for boys.

  6. Speech of the decade • When we let freedom ring…we, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

  7. Clothing • The 60’s didn’t start out with colorful clothes, the transition happened gradually. • Before long, mini skirts and platform shoes were all the rage. Plaid pants and paisley shirts turned men into walking fashion statements.

  8. Where’s the Party • The "Twist" was the most popular dance back in the 60's. • Pink Floyd was one of the first  bands to play psychedelic music

  9. New Inventions • Douglas Englehart of Stanford University developed the computer mouse along with a five key "corded" keyboard in 1964. • The first cash dispensing machine is installed by First Philadelphia Bank in 1968 .

  10. More Inventions • In 1961, physicist Theodore Maiman perfected the laser that is now used in surgery.

  12. Businesses of the Decade Soft drinks were part of the major movements of the 1960s. During the 1960s high electricity growth rates continued. NASA geared up for the space program to the moon.

  13. Vietnam War • The Vietnam War resulted in the loss of many great soldiers. • Arguments continue to this day on whether or not we made the right decision regarding the war.

  14. Communication of the Decade • ECHO I communications satellite is launched and provides first satellite television broadcast. • Touchtone phones are introduced to replace the rotary dial phones. • BBN develops the first modem. • Dolby introduces its noise reduction. • Bell System adopts the use of  "911" as a nationwide emergency telephone number
