O’Keeffe - “Bones” Period • Characteristics of Work: • Bones symbolized the wild, wonderful nature of the west. • Cow skulls especially showed her audience the untamed, beautiful nature of the desert west. • More surreal style. • Examples of Influences in work: • She painted animal skulls in the works. O’Keeffe - “Flower” Period • Characteristics of Work: • Painted giant, detailed, almost surreal paintings of flowers • Innovative in using brilliant, bold colors with simple patterns and shapes. • Influences in her work: • She painted large, bright flowers. • Some considered her work controversial and sexual. • “I have painted what each flower I s to me and I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I see.” ---O’Keeffe Hibiscus with Plumeria

O’Keeffe - “Ghost Ranch” Period • O’Keefe went to the Ghost Ranch in Taos, New Mexico in 1930. • Characteristics of Work: • She fell in love with the barrenness and expanse of land uninterrupted and spoiled by humans. • She loved the feeling of the country’s symbols: life as a struggle, sadness, and resurrection. • Examples of Influences in work: • She painted landscapes that showed absolutely no human influence. Mark Rothko • 1903 – 1970 Russia • In 1949 introduced a compositional format comprised of several vertically aligned rectangular forms set within a colored field. • In his large floating rectangles of color, which seem to engulf the spectator, he explored with a rare mastery of nuance the expressive potential of color contrasts and modulations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v1mBepDlOw

Warhol appropriated (used without permission) images from magazines, newspapers, and press photos of the most popular celebrities of the time. • In 1964, Warhol opened his own art studio known as “The Factory” to reflect goods that were mass produced • “Once you “got” Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again.
