  2. Real people have wants and needs that drive them to act certain ways … your characters should be no different! In other words, real people and fictional characters both have motivation(s). Character motivation: Why characters do what they do.

  3. Check the following for signs of character motivation: • Actions • Dialogue • Interior monologue: • A character’s expression of his/her inner thoughts, feelings, etc. • Descriptions of characters • Narration

  4. Direct vs. Indirect Characterization • Direct characterizationtells you what the character is like. • Revealed by descriptive adjectives and phrases • Ex. The patient boy. • Indirect characterizationshows you what the character is like. • Revealed through character’s speech, actions, appearance, etc. • Ex. The girl narrowed her eyes and leaned towards me so that her face was only an inch away from mine. “I … want … you … gone!”

  5. Ways to Create/Notice Indirect Characterization: STEAL Speech Thoughts Effect on other people How do others behave towards him? How do others react to her? Actions Looks(appearance)

  6. SHOWING VS. TELLING • Use figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification • Similes:comparisons using “like” or “as” • “You, with your words like knives and swords …” • Metaphors:comparisons without “like” or “as” • “A woman’s heart is a deep ocean of secrets …” • Personification:giving human traits to something nonhuman • “The cruel sea swallowed the entire Armada in one gulp.” • Try the “camera test” … Can a camera see what you’re describing?

  7. It was a beautiful day outside. The sky was a clear cobalt blue and birds sang in every tree. The letter made Fiorella furious. Fiorella tore the letter to pieces in her hands. Lucas acted bravely. Lucas leaped through the flaming doorway and lifted the old man over his shoulder as if he were a sack of flour. Cassandra felt nervous. The blood drained from Cassandra’s face and her breathing came in short, quick gasps.

  8. Showing vs. Telling — Practice On a sheet of paper (to be placed in your binder under the “Notes” tab), copy down the four emotions on the right. Next, write a sentence that shows rather than tells that emotion. If you have room on the sheet of paper you are using for these notes, go ahead and use that space. Just make sure that you label this as “Show vs. Tell Practice.” Sad Angry Lazy Excited
