Brief Introduction • Andrew (Drew) Smith • BPE (McMaster), MHK (Windsor), MEd (HK PolyU), PhD (Waterloo) • Biomechanics • Worked in Canada, Australia, Hong Kong (x2), England, and New Zealand • Departments of Rehabilitation Sciences, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Healthcare Professions, Physical and Health Education • Research interests: • Gait analysis, balance, sport skills, methods (EMG, modeling) • Teaching interests: • Biomechanics, Gait Analysis, Muscle Mechanics, Laboratory Techniques in Human Motion

Brief History • Motion analysis laboratory – goal for several years at SMU • CSPM, PT, and OT departments • Issues of money, space, and infrastructure support • Money: • Community responded with over $600,000 in donations • Donors include SMU staff and alumni • Space: • SMU agreed to the repurpose of a classroom in HEC • Infrastructure: • Tremendous support from Facilities, IT, Media Services

Activities Since September 2013 • Research Projects • The effect of chronic ankle instability (CAI) on gait dynamics and muscle activation patterns during planned and unplanned changes-of-direction during normal, level-ground walking – Smith (PI) • Effects of an adjustable foot orthotic on lower limb biomechanics – Smith (PI), Dutra & Lynn • A study of the biomechanical exposure and risk for lumbar and upper extremity injuries in hotel room cleaners while making luxurious beds with and without a mattress lift tool – Harris-Adamson (PI)
