Remit of the Safer & Stronger Communities Select Committee • Assist in the development of the budget and policy framework • Assist in the development of new policies • Scutinise and review existing council policies and community safety programmes • Consider how to encourage and enhance community engagement • Build respect in communities and promote equality and diversity All with the purpose of reducing levels of crime, fear of crime and reassuring the public

  3. Work Programme 2007-08 June – review of services July – Communal Alarms August – ASB, nuisance neighbours and the ‘Respect Agenda’ October – ‘VOICE’ (Chase District Youth Forum) November - ‘Respect Agenda’ February – ‘Burntwood Innit’ (Youth Service)

  4. Work Programme 2007-08 The following items were proposed, but not considered: - • Road Safety • Fireworks – Trading Standards • LAA performance • Probation Service

  5. Recommendations from the Committee Community Alarms Service: Better publicity to reach a wider audience, for example: • Leaflets with Council Tax bills • Press releases • Website

  6. Recommendations from the Committee ASB and nuisance behaviour by occupiers of non-council housing: • ASB Strategy • Recognition for businesses that minimise the impact of litter and other ASB in their vicinity • Stronger use of powers to curb dog fouling, including on non-council land • Fixed Penalty Notices • Supporting victims and witnesses • ‘Safe By Design’ public spaces • Councillors to attend Joint Operations Group

  7. Recommendations from the Committee Engaging with Young People: • Engage with the disaffected not just the positive young people • Council to engage formally with the local Youth Forum (VOICE) • More facilities and resources for young people e.g. youth clubs, street-based youth work, street play etc. • More Junior Wardens • Intelligence led, targeted interventions • Promoting & rewarding good behaviour

  8. Recommendations from the Committee ‘RESPECT’: • Anti-Social Behaviour Strategy for the District • Fireworks - tackle their misuse through stronger use of available powers • Provide analysis of ASB incidents, particularly by age • Fixed Penalty Notices • Supporting victims and witnesses
