  2. Basic Facts • Normal Pregnancy is how many weeks? • 40 week • ‘Term’ is considered to be? • 37 to 42 weeks • The legal definition of foetal viability in the UK is currently? • 24 weeks • What is the definition of foetal period? • 9 weeks onwards

  3. Monitoring Pregnancy • USS • Week 11-13 (mainly dating) and 18-20 (anomalies) • Amniocentesis • CTG • Doppler Ultrasound • Foetal scalp blood sample • Mother

  4. Growth • Weight is estimated from? • Head circumference • Abdominal circumference • Femur length

  5. IUGR • Causes can be maternal, placental or foetal • What is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical growth restriction? • Asymmetrical: • Most common • HEAD SPARING • Lack of subcutaneous fat leads to thin, small body which is out of proportion • Usually extrinsic factors • Symmetrical: • More serious • Chromosomal disorders, early gestational infections, alcohol

  6. Biophysical Profile • Breathing movements • Amniotic fluid volume • Tone at rest • Heart Rate • Movement • BATH’M

  7. Cardiotocography • Baseline • 110-160 • Variability • ≥5 • Decelerations • None (except back to baseline) • Accelerations • Present

  8. Prematurity • What is a tocolytic? • Medication used to suppress premature labour • What does it allow? • Administration of corticosteroids in order to accelerate foetal lung maturity • Transfer to suitable unit
