  1. Central Repository of Taxonomies and Vocabularies relevant to a European Learning Society CEN/ISSS 3 - 07 - 2002

  2. Overview • Major achievements since start of project - Sept 2001 • Demo of repository • Report • Future activities • Next steps

  3. Major Achievementssince Sept 2002 • Systematic description of terms used in the field of vocabularies • Research leading to greater interoperability • Guidelines • Agenda for future work • Repository of vocabularies

  4. Chapter 2 Vocabularies and LOM • Value lists, classifications, taxonomies, thesauri, glossaries, dictionaries, ontologies, natural language • What do they have in common • Where do they differ • Three properties: • Unstructured vs. structured (lists, trees, networks) • Purpose (describing, indexing, defining) • Controlled vs. not controlled

  5. Chapter 3 • Describing Learning Objects withValue lists, classifications, taxonomies, thesauri, glossaries, dictionaries, ontologies, natural language

  6. Chapter 4 Standards and Interoperability Issues and guidelines • how to build multilingual vocabularies • semantic mappings of vocabularies • guidelines for structuring and updating thesauri • use of LOM for describing vocabularies • alternative vocabularies for LOM • guidelines for the LOM • bindings of vocabularies • mechanisms for sharing vocabularies

  7. Semantic Mappings • Exact equivalence • Inexact equivalence • Partial equivalence • Single-to-multiple equivalence • Non-equivalence

  8. Guidelines for structuring and updating thesauri General Learning Application

  9. Mechanisms for sharing vocabularies Obtaining structured subsets API

  10. Chapter 5 • Supporting material • ISO-2788 • ISO-5964 • Mapping of metadata models • XML bindings for Thesauri

  11. The Repository Search • Phrase • Attributes with value space Workflow • Submit – screening – accept / reject Modify • Password protected when submission has not yet been published

  12. Proposal for future activities Harmonisation • Harmonisation of simple vocabularies • Harmonisation of thesauri is desirable but perhaps too ambitious at this stage. • Investigate APIs for vocabularies • Bindings for • Vocabularies • Querying vocabularies

  13. Proposal for future activities Awareness raising • Contact people to populate repository. • Raise visibility of repository within the international learning community.

  14. Proposal for future activities Technological development • Technological support for harmonisation support • Translation of simple LOM vocabularies into 11 European languages • Import / export from repository • Extend repository to collect schemes

  15. Proposal for future activities Repository of LO Collections • LOM descriptors at the collection level are inherited by instance level • Quality descriptors and methods of quality assurance • A single repository of LO is impossible

  16. Next Steps • Finished writing the report. Going into polishing mode. Distribution in August. • WS members are kindly requested to submit vocabulary descriptions • LOM vocabularies will be submitted by project team • Addition of assessment posibility to repository
