  2. A small city has seven schools. The number of students attending the schools are shown in the table below.A. How many school age children are there in the city all together?B. If the population of the elementary, middle, and high school age children represent about 1/3 of the total population of the city, estimate the total population of the city to the nearest hundred. Express your answer using a number multiplied by a power of ten.C. Comparing the number of elementary school students to the number of high school students, would you conclude that the population of this city is increasing or decreasing? All together means you add. Write the numbers on your paper and find the sum. Be sure to line them up properly. What did you get? Check your answer on the next slide.

Next, in the hundreds column 2, 4, 3, 9, 1, 0, 2, and the 2 you carried over has a sum of 23. Carry the 2 to the thousands column and write the 3 below. • 12,390 Finally, in the thousands column 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, and the 2 you carried over has a sum of 12. Instead of carrying the 1, write 12 down below the line. The comma goes between the 3 and 2. Did you get it right?

If the population of the elementary, middle, and high school age children represent about 1/3 of the total population of the city, estimate the total population of the city to the nearest hundred. Express your answer using a number multiplied by a power of ten. You have to round (estimate) the answer to question A First. Find the hundreds place. Look to the right. Five and up move it up. Four and below, let it go. What do you think the answer is? Write it down. The 3 is in the hundreds place and immediately to the right is a 9. So, bump the 3 up to 4. The answer was 12,400 students. Did you get it right? 9 is bigger than 5, so bump the 3 up one! 12,390 Any easy way to think of this is to ask yourself, “Is 390 closer to 300 or 400?” 3 is in the hundreds place.

Express your answer using a number multiplied by a power of ten. Write your numbers down. Be sure to put the three on the bottom and line the numbers up. Find the product. What did you get? 1 12,400 X 3 Next, you need to understand that we’ll have to multiply the estimate you just came up with by 3 to find out the total population. That’s because only 1/3 of the population is represented by the kids. 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 is 3/3 or 1 whole. • 37,200 people • Did you get it right?

Express your answer using a number multiplied by a power of ten. In order to write your answer using the power of ten you must first write down the base number. Remember you are using 37,200. Write the base number down now. 37,200 Did you write 372? 372 is the base number 2 is an exponent Next, count the zeroes. 2 372 x 10 Did you get 2? Did you get it right? Finally, write the base number X 10 with the number of zeroes as an exponent next to the 10.

  7. C. Comparing the number of elementary school students to the number of high school students, would you conclude that the population of this city is increasing or decreasing? Line up the three numbers correctly and find the sum. What did you get? Finally, we’re on part C. When you compare numbers you figure out which one is bigger and which one is smaller. In order to do that we must find out how many elementary students there are in all. We must add. 1,240 1,410 +1,330 • 3,980 • Did you get it right?

Comparing the number of elementary school students to the number of high school students, would you conclude that the population of this city is increasing or decreasing? 1 1 2,095 +2,215 Now you have to find the sum of the high school students. Be sure to line the numbers up correctly. • 4,310 • Did you get it right? Now, compare your two numbers. Which one is smaller? Is the elementary smaller, or is the high school smaller?

Comparing the number of elementary school students to the number of high school students, would you conclude that the population of this city is increasing or decreasing? • Did you get it right? 4 thousand is more than 3 thousand, so there are more high school students. Lastly, you need to decide if the population of the city is increasing or decreasing…. • Well, if there are less young people that would mean…..The population is getting smaller. The “big” vocabulary word for this is decreasing
