  9. WHITE AMERICAN TRADITIONS VS. MINORITY HISTORY

  10. Critical Race Theory COUNTER STORY- A method of sharing a story that aims to cast doubt on the validity of accepted views or myths, especially ones held by the majority. It is a strategy and means of exposing and critiquing dialogues that perpetuate racial stereotypes. Pacific Educational Group 2013

  11. “Counter Story” • “Cost of Crime”-12 trillion Wall Street vs. 6.1 billion in all thefts • Dear White America Pg. 27 • “U.S.A. home of Liberty and Justice for all”- Naturalization Act of 1790 only white people could be considered citizens. • Dear White America Pg. 21 • “People of color have advantages in scholarships and employment” • -less than 4% of all scholarships money consider race as a factor. • -Blacks with degrees are twice as likely to be unemployed compared with whites who have the same education, Latinos & Asians 40%, more likely than whites to be unemployed with equal education. • -$13,000 more on average per year compared to their white counterparts who have same education and job . • Dear White America Pg. 29

  12. OVER 350 YEARS OF DISCRIMINATION HOW DO WE FIX IT?

  13. The Permanence of Racism The notion that racism is a permanent component of American life. Racism in the USA is persuasive and operates like the air we breathe; it is ubiquitous and omnipresent. Pacific Educational Group 2013 *Research on subconscious and implicit racial bias has found that a vast majority of us, myself included, have internalized certain racist and prejudicial beliefs about people of color. Dear White America Pg. 67 *African children prefer white dolls to black dolls, because they view the former as “good’ and “nice” while they see the latter as “mean” and “stupid.” Dear White America Pg. 68-69 *Post-racial is false, as to say sexism has disappeared in Indian, Pakistan, G.B., and Israel following the election of female prime ministers. Dear White America Pg. 66

  14. The Permanence of Racism Continued • 1.2 million cases of overt racial discrimination in the work place. • New lighter skinned immigrants mostly from Europe shown to earn 15% as equally qualified darker skinned non-European immigrants. • Slavery, Segregation, Immigration Restrictions against non-European Immigrants • Negative self image of one’s self

  15. “I know we aren’t to blame for history – either its horrors or the legacy it has left us. But we are responsible for how we bear that legacy, and what we make of it in the present”. Wise, 2012, Kindle Loc. 151-152

  16. POPULAR MISCONCEPTIONS

  17. WHAT WE HEAR!! Dear White America Pg 40 If people of color would simply try harder, they could make it Even if racism remains a problem, dwelling on the matter or making too big a issue of it will only harm people of color – encouraging a “victim mentality”. That the real thing holding people of color back – especially black folks – is not racism, but rather their own behavioral pathologies. It is unfair to criticize the United States for racism in the past or present; after all, every nation has had its problems with discrimination and inequality.

  18. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO US AS EDUCATIONAL LEADERS?

  19. Internal Work Explore our own cultural identity Examine our attitudes, assumptions, misconceptions Embrace the change and grow from it Talk about racism – it won’t perpetuate the victim mentality

  20. Will we “…continue to rely on an outdated set of directions… or perhaps question those directions, perhaps create a new set of instructions for how to thrive and arrive at that destination of personal and collective accomplishment…” Tim Wise Dear White America pg. 147

  21. What Can WE do? • Learn a second language • Act as an ally • School Improvement Plans • Culturally responsive teaching practices • Teach multiple perspectives of history and current events • Courageous conversations • Teaching with Purpose workshops • The Oregon Center for Education Equity (CFEE) workshops • C.A.R.E.: Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap training • Culture; Ability; Resilience; Effort

  22. Loaded Words Foreigner Handicapped Muslim Hispanic Poor Rich Black Gay Mexican White Old Asian Illegal Straight Atheist

  23. Communicate EffectivelyMake the Intent Match the Impact Intent Impact What you heard me say What came out of my mouth filtered through my cultural experiences that you heard through your ears and filtered through your cultural experiences. • What I meant to say • What I heard in my own head and felt in my heart Portillo Consulting, International

  24. “It is out of a belief that white folks can and must do better – a belief that springs from a place of hopefulness, compassion, and even love – that I offer these thoughts.” Tim Wise Dear White America pg 12

  25. Question One: What are you asking yourself NOW about YOUR perceptions or beliefs? Question Two: What is one specific action YOU can take?
