  2. Age of apprentices:1995-2010

  3. Educational background of trade apprentices

  4. Methodology • LSAY data from Y95 and Y06 • Young males, focussing on academic achievement and SES • Model the probability of going to university by age 19 • Model the probability of undertaking an apprenticeship by age 19 as a function of prob of going to uni + other factors • Look how the relationships have changed

  5. Probability of going to university • State • school sector • employed at age 15 • year 12 aspiration • born outside Australia • father is a trades worker • sex • trades workers concentration

  6. Probability of going to university (cont) • maths and reading score • SES • cohort • cohort*sex • cohort*employed at 15 • cohort* father in trades • cohort*year 12 aspiration • cohort*SES

  7. Probability of being an apprentice • propensity for university • year 12 aspiration • born outside Australia • father in the trades • trades worker concentration • maths and reading achievement • SES

  8. Probability of being an apprentice (cont) • cohort • cohort*propensity for university • cohort*SES • cohort*employed at 15 • cohort*father in trades • cohort*yr 12 aspiration

  9. Probability of being an apprentice by maths achievement score, Y95 males

  10. Probability of being an apprentice by reading achievement score, Y95 males

  11. Probability of being an apprentice by SES, Y95 males

  12. Change in probabilities by mathematics achievement scores, Y95 males

  13. Change in probabilities by reading achievement scores, Y95 males

  14. Change in probabilities by SES, Y95 males

  15. Change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by mathematics achievement, Y95 apprentices

  16. Change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by reading achievement, Y95 apprentices

  17. Change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by SES, Y95 apprentices

  18. Relative change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by mathematics achievement by mathematics achievement, Y95

  19. Relative change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by mathematics achievement by reading achievement, Y95

  20. Relative change in likelihood of being an apprentice and going to university by mathematics achievement by SES, Y95

  21. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking an apprenticeship for all Y95 males, by mathematics achievement quintiles

  22. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking an apprenticeship for all Y95 males, by reading achievement quintiles

  23. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking an apprenticeship all Y95 males, by SES quintiles

  24. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking university all Y95 males, by mathematics achievement quintiles

  25. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking university all Y95 males, by reading achievement quintiles

  26. Synthetic distributions for probability of undertaking university all Y95 males, by SES quintiles

  27. Synthetic distributions for probability of no study for Y95 males, by Mathematics achievement quintiles

  28. Synthetic distributions for probability of no study for Y95 males, by Reading achievement quintiles

  29. Synthetic distributions for probability of no study for Y95 males, by SES quintiles

  30. Conclusions • Apprenticeships tend to draw on those with lower academic achievement and SES • but apprenticeships are drawing from a larger demographic than earlier • An expansion in higher education has accentuated this pattern a bit
