Scheduling: Required High School Courses- • Math: 4 Credits (PLUS 1 math every year in high school) • English: 4 Credits • Science: 4 Credits • Social Studies: 3 Credits • Foreign Language: 2 Credits (generally need a 3rd year for a selective college) • Wellness: 1 Credit • PE: .5 Credit (this is a separate credit from Wellness) • Capstone/Senior Project: .5 Credit • Personal Finance: .5 Credit • ACT Prep: .5 Credit • Fine Arts/Electives: 8+ Credits • To have taken at least 1 ACT test TOTAL: 28 Credits required

TYPICAL JUNIOR SCHEDULE English: AP English 11 Math: Algebra II or higher level math (HR Pre-Cal, Applied Math, DE math class etc.) Science: Honors BiologySocial Studies: AP US History P.E./ACT Prep: ½ semester eachArts Classes Current 10th Graders: Wellness, 1 Social Studies and 2 foreign language classes should be finished by May of this year…. if not, see Mrs. Bacher afterwards so we can make adjustments on your registration form so as to graduate on time. Are you behind in any classes? See Mrs. Bacher to make arrangements ASAP

Typical Senior Schedule • English: HR English 12 OR DE English • Math:Algebra II or higher level math • (HR Pre-Cal, Applied Math, DE math class etc.) • Science: AP Environmental Science or Chemistry 2 • Social Studies: Economics & Government (1 semester each) • Capstone/Senior Project(1 semester) • Personal Finance (1 semester) • Arts Classes

REMINDER: EXTRA PERCENTAGE POINTS Added only to the FINAL grade once full credit is earned. • Honors (HR) classes (9th -12th Grades): +3 (for everyone enrolled) • Dual Enrollment (primarily only in 12th Grade): +4 (for everyone enrolled) • AP classes (11th & 12th Grades): +5 (only if you take the test)

HIGH SCHOOL STANDARIZED TESTS 10th Grade: PSAT(optional) in October ASPIRE(a practice ACT test) in October EOC State test in April 11th Grade: PSAT(optional) in October ACT DIAGNOSTICtest(a practice ACT test)in October/November Official ACT in March/April​ EOC State test in April AP test (optional) in May 12th Grade: ​ Official ACT in October​ AP test (optional) in May

  7. PSAT(10thand 11thgrade) – optional • it is a practice SAT test; we do not administer SAT • $15-20 (Registration is in early Sept.) • test is in October • we recommend that our top-ranked students in the 11th grade take this test next October to compete for the National Merit Scholarship.

  8. ACT(11th) – Required for high school graduation! • All Juniors take it, county-wide, take in the spring at CCA; it is free; we register you for it • given off-campus 4-5 times a year; we recommend taking it 2-3 times total; approx. $55 each time (WRITING portion not needed except in a few cases) • an information sheet & a practice booklet are on the bookshelf in Counseling Center or see Mrs. Bacher’s website. • remember the deadline to register is usually 30 days prior to test • register at www.actstudent.org • some colleges SUPERSCORE, see Mrs. Malone for a list. Aim for a minimum of 21 to receive TN Hope Scholarship

AP tests (11th & 12th) – optional; costs approx. $95 per test; • collect money in March; tests are given in May • * requires a lot of extra studying outside of class • *very difficult but passing with a score of 4-5 means you could • earn 3-6 college credits for that class (which cost on average $500 per credit in TN colleges) • * you get the extra 5 points to the yearly grade • only if you take the test

Act practice Tests • Practice ACT tests offered at CCA: • Results show your strengths and weaknesses in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science; plus practice to learn format. • ASPIRE – taken in October of 10th Grade • ACT diagnostic test - taken in September of 11th Grade • Online practice tests & resources – Varsity Tutor; Mrs. Bacher’s website for many more • ACT – Spring of 11th and Fall of 12th Grade

  11. When to take the ACT • December or Februaryof Junior year (family pays & registers for this) • March or April of Junior year (free, at CCA & we register your student) • Sometimes in Juneprior to Senior year (Some students take it a 3rd time if they are trying to reach a certain score; family pays & registers for this) • Octoberof Senior year (free, at CCA & we register your student) Last real chancesto take an ACT for guaranteed college for freshman scholarships are September & October of the Senior Year.

ACT Admissions Requirements for Colleges UTC – minimum requirements combined GPA of 2.85 AND 18 ACT composite OR combined GPA of 2.3 AND 21 ACT composite UTK – average admitted freshmen ACT score is 28 composite, 29 Min for Scholarships PENN State – average admitted freshmen 3.55-3.97 GPA AND ACT 26-30 composite

  14. What Should You start doing : Start checking emails weekly – it’s how everyone communicates now! Start your RESUME! Record your Community Service – Dates & hours spent; Mrs. Bacher has emailed a form to you that you could use. Keep grades up Take most challenging classes Take ACT, PSAT, SAT, or SAT Subject Tests- confirm which test is required by potential colleges

  15. Start a “college/scholarship/financial info” binder this semester • Create a separate college email for parents and students to use. • Attend College Fairs • Do online college searches, such as: ww.collegeboard.com • Visit colleges • Explore Careers and Job Shadow

Campus Visits Try to go when school is in session Summer, Fall Break, & Spring Break Many colleges can accommodate weekend visits If you plan a road trip – don’t plan to visit more than two schools in one day.Take a detour when going out of town. Can schedule online through the college website… “visit us” 2 excused absences allowed during Senior year Save Senior year visits for needing to make a final decision or you decide to apply to a school you had not considered.

Start a binder: • Major Headings can include: • List of websites and the user names/passwords • *IE: Student & Parent FSA IDs, Naviance, scholarship websites, etc. • College search information-brochures/internet printouts • College Fair information • Letters of Recommendation (request from teachers the end of Junior year/beginning of Senior year) • Scholarship info (applications, letters) • FAFSA information • Volunteer Hour records

GPA COUNTS Colleges/scholarships criteria are based off: * your GPA from May of your Junior year and test scores Key GPA cutoffs for college admissions and scholarships are: 2.5 – minimum for a 4-year college; community colleges will accept lower 3.0 –HOPE scholarship (based on SENIOR year’s May GPA) 3.0/3.25 – general academic or talent-based scholarships 3.5 or higher – more selective colleges and scholarships To keep track of grades/assignments that affect your Junior year GPA, use Powerschool. ***Email/see Mrs. Bacher if you forget it***

School size Do you want a small college with 2000 students or a large university with 15,000?

College is EXPENSIVE… • Talk about HOW you will pay for it • To get scholarships… • RESEARCH & APPLY EARLY • Deadlines for scholarships begin in October • Federal & State Funds are available • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) OCTOBER of Senior year • This will use the Prior PriorYear income taxes for filing purposes.

Senior Year • UTC - 30 ACT & 3.75 GPA = $5,000 a year • - 24 ACT & 3.4 GPA = $2,000 a year • Maryville College - 30+ ACT & 3.8 GPA= $25,000 a year • - 23+ ACT & 3.0 GPA = $21,000 a year • MTSU – 32 ACT & 3.5 GPA = $5,000 a year • - 26 ACT & 3.5 GPA = $2,000 a year

There may be a lot of advertising on the site, just say no to their offers. • www.studentsreview.com Provides a lot of information from students about their schools. Students grade their schools in a variety of different areas and write reviews.

TN Promise (2 Free Years) Can ONLY be used for a 2 year degree at a TN College (most 4 year schools do not offer 2 year degrees) No ACT or GPA requirements Is a LAST DOLLAR Scholarship – only helps AFTER all other aid is applied Pell Grant (up to $5,800/year for families whose annual income is less than $36,000) TN Hope ($3,000/year for students with 3.0 GPA or 21 ACT) Will only provide up to $4,000 a year for any school

TN Lottery (HOPE) Scholarship 21 ACT (980 SAT) OR 3.0 GPA Renewal -2.75 college cum GPA after 24 credits and 48 credits $3500 a year for 4 year school $3000 a year for 2 year school based on Fall and Spring Semester 69% of TN received HOPE 50% lost it after 1st year 36% did not go back for 2nd year Can only be used at TN schools

  39. TN General Assembly Merit Scholarship $1000/year supplement to HOPE Scholarship Must have a 3.75 GPA AND 29 ACT Can use either Aspire or General Assembly Merit (GAMS), but not both Can only be used at TN schools

  40. TN HOPE ASPIRE AWARD $1500/year - supplement to HOPE Scholarship Must meet HOPE requirements AND Parents’ adjusted gross income on tax form must be $36,000 or less Can use either Aspire or General Assembly Merit (GAMS), but not both Can only be used at TN schools

TN HOPE Access Grant IF YOU DO NOT QUALIFY FOR TN HOPE SCHOLARSHIP AT GRADUATION, you get one more chance to apply for it through this grant… • $2,750 per year for 4 year schools • $1,750 per year for 2 year schools • Must have 2.75 high school cumulative GPA AND 18, 19, OR 20 National ACT (at least 860 SAT) AND Parent’s adjusted gross income of $36,000 or less • Converts to HOPE Scholarship if college GPA maintained after year 1. Can only be used at TN schools
