  1. News from HOGS Programmatic review Nuclear Physics Travel Meeting with Wakeham Meeting with Ian Pearson STFC Nuclear Physics Advisory Panel Student Travel

  2. Programmatic review Report prepared for PPAN concerning the Programmatic Review Report is available on the web Results of Programmatic Review are on the web

  3. Nuclear Physics Travel Coordinated response to grant outcome re travel for approved experiments Submitted a proposal to STFC Outcome discussed earlier

  4. Meeting with Wakeham • July 30th PJN, Brian Fulton, Paddy Regan • Letter to him highlighted: • International excellence • Low funding of nuclear physics • Applicability and industry demand for students/postdocs • Additional Evidence submitted: • Low funding compared to other countries • Evidence of KE etc. • Meeting lasted 1.5 hours. We were well received. • Wakeham’s first report will be on 19th September 2008

  5. Meeting with Ian Pearson August 26th PJN, Guenther Rosner, Bill Gelletly Meeting followed a letter to him Points raised: Need for UK to be part of FAIR Government will sign up if recommended to do so by STFC Need for additional investment in Nuclear Physics based on its international academic excellence and the need of the nation for nuclear physicists He said he would await Wakeham Meeting lasted 1 hour

  6. STFC Nuclear Physics Advisory Panel Call for nominations closes 30th September 2008 The panels are tasked to: Draft and maintain a roadmap describing current and future research opportunities in their areas, for presentation and approval by PPAN Consult and interact with the community to ensure its views are canvassed and there is an appropriate and effective route for communication with STFC on strategic programmatic issuesMake an independent presentation to PPAN on the relevant panel area in years in which an STFC Programmatic Review takes place, thereby providing community input to the programmatic review processRespond to other specific requests from PPAN for advice as the need arises Once this panel is set up, consider the role of HOGS, NPF, annual town meeting as input route to it

  7. Student travel In the STFC DTG award just announced an element has been included for the overseas fieldwork allowance This DTG covers students starting in 2008 and 2009 The allowance is £5.74k per student for their 3.5 year studentship This is based on the average spend on Particle Physics Experiments in the past few years I intend to collate information from the Nuclear Physics groups and get an assurance from STFC that they will increase this if there is demand based on the student’s experimental programme Most of the responses I have so far suggest that the actual cost in previous years is £10-12k per studentship
