Catabolism • Means ‘breaking down’ • First Proteins, Carbohydrates and Lipids are broken down into ‘Pyruvate’ and ‘Acetyl-CoA’ • It is advisable to first follow the carbohydrate pathway to the end, then go back and look at lipids and proteins • Let’s start by examining how it all works on p185 fig 16.1

  5. The TCA Cycle • Let’s examine Fig 16.6 on p190 • The point is to examine how the Acetyl-CoA changes as it enters and goes around the cycle • During this process, what by-products are yielded?

  6. The electron transport chain • Firstly, let’s look at how the electrons move, and how protons are ‘pumped’ across the membrane • Then, look at how the diffusion gradient is created, and how the ‘flowback’ creates ATP • Work with someone to read and summarise p189-192
