  2. Overview • Current outbreak refer to Measles, Ebola, E coli, Influenza, Zika, Malaria, and other viruses • How do these viruses effect humans? • How can you prepare for traveling to high risk areas? • What treatments are available for people exposed?

Measles • 2000 to 2010, the U.S. had about 60 cases of Measles a year • High Vaccinerates reduce the amount of Measles cases  • Anti-vaxxers increased the number of cases to 205 a year  • Irritated, watery eyes, or conjunctivitis • Red, blotchy skin, high fever Measles, or Rubeola, is an infection that usually occurs during the early childhood stages

  4. Ebola • Bloodborne disease  • Contracted from deceased animals • 21 days after exposure results in fever and fatigue • Altered mental state and organ failure are fatal • Outbreaks kill millions within days An infection that results in fatal bleeding and organ failure

  5. E Coli • Frequently found in undercooked food  • Chipotle'se coli outbreak got a lot of media attention • Dehydration and lack of urination • Cured by a small dose of antibiotics Escherichia coli causes intestinal problems like diarrhea and stomach pains

  10. Zikadg Zika is an infectious disease that has mild symptoms comparable to the dengue fever • Spreads through mosquito bites and sex • Fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes • Can cause birth defects • No vaccine or medication • Doesn’t display symptoms in most cases

Malariadg A disease transmitted through mosquito bites that causes death and severe illness  • Symptoms appear in a week to a month • High fever, Chills, Flu-like symptoms • Malaria occurs in Africa, Central and South America, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the South Pacific •  Prevented with prescription medication • Treated with anti-parasitics and antibiotics
