Forms First Conditional (real situations) If + Present Simple + will Second Conditional (unrealsituations If + Past Simple + would (were)
Compare: First Conditional If I have problems with my computer, I will buy a new one. (a real situation) Second Conditional If I had a computer, I would buy aprinter. (the situation is unreal) Both refer to the present and future.
Сonditionals Study the example situation: Sue wants to phone Paul but she can’t do this because she doesn’t know his number.She says: If I knew his number, I would phone him She doesn’t know his number. She is imagining the situation.
Study the sentences: • If+past (if I knew/if I were/ • if we didn’t), would +infinitive • The meaning is present, not past: • Tom would read more if he • hadmore time. • (but he doesn’t have much time) • We wouldn’t have any money • if we didn’t work.(but we work)
Arrange the sentences into 2 columns: If I see a nice dress in the shop, I’ll buy it. If we run out of money, we’ll get a job. What would you do if you saw a ghost? If I miss a bus, I’ll get a taxi.
If you were in my position, what would you do? If I didn’t want to go to the party, I wouldn’t go. You can come if you buy a ticket. Would you work harder if you paid better? If I were Prime Minister, I’d increase salaries

Work in pairs. • Look at the following situations. • Decide if they are: • possible • imaginary and probably won’t • happen Ask and answer questions about what you will do or would do in each situation.
Example: Situation 1: There is a good film on TV tonight. (possible) Question 1: What will you do if there is a good film on TV tonight? Answer 1: I’ll watch it.
Example: Situation 2: You don’t have any homework tonight. (imaginary) Question 2: What would you do if you had no homework tonight? Answer 2: I would play computer.

Lottery Have you ever won money in a lottery? Do you think it is possible? Look at the pictures and read what people would do if they won $2 million. Match the pictures with the sentences.
