Ocean Currents • Ocean currents = large amount of ocean water that moves in a particular, unchanging direction. • More that 20 major currents in the world. • Currents transport lots of dissolved minerals, oxygen, solar energy and carbon dioxide around the planet. • They also move fish and plankton. • Largest current = Antarctic circumpolar. Located in the southern ocean, 24000 km long. • Antarctic circumpolar carries more water than all the rivers of earth times 100. • Two types of currents are; surface currents/deep water currents. • Speed + Direction of the current relies on the spinning of the earth, the wind and the shape of the continents.

  3. The Effect Of Wind • Wind is air moving because of temperature differences. • Winds traveling over ocean cause it to move.

  4. The Effect Of The Earths Spin • It affects the earths spin. • The Earth spins West – East • Carioles effect = when wind is redirected because the earth is spinning. • It differs depending on which side the wind is on, on the equator.

  5. Continent Shape • The third factor that effects ocean currents. • Continents effect current movement. • Its what makes deep currents move. • Can act as a barrier and can redirect water.

  6. What Makes Deep Water Currents Move? • Water Temp: cold water sinks below warm water. Water then moves along sea floor. • Water salinity: water with high salt is denser. • Eventually the cold water will heat and rise or be pushed by other cold water.

  7. Ocean Waves and Their Effect on Shaping Land • Some waves are very large. • Wind – effects the height and strength of a wave. • Largest wave = tsunami. • Tsunamis are caused by disturbances on the ocean floor like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. • Waves can break away at coasts and leave sediments behind. • Waves can leave a coastline sandy or sloped.

  8. Tides • Tides = the daily cycle of rising and falling of ocean waters. • The moons gravitational pull, pulls the water away that is closest to it; creating high and low tides.
