  1. Caring for Clothes Chapter 19-5

  2. Steps to Keeping Your Clothes in Great Shape • Take care not to damage or soil clothing as you get dressed or undressed • Open fasteners so garments slip on easier • Protect clothing as you pull garments over your head • Apply makeup or creams after you get dressed

  3. After you get undressed, inspect clothes for stains, rips or missing buttons • Hang clean clothes on a hanger • Fold clean sweaters and place them in a drawer • Put dirty clothes into the laundry container

  4. Laundering Steps • Read care labels • Sort clothes properly • Prepare clothes for laundering • Understand laundering products • Using the washing machine • Decide drying method

  5. Factors to consider when sorting clothes for laundering… • Color • Fabric • Surface texture • Degree of soil

  6. Steps you can take to conserve energy as you care for your clothes… • Do laundry at times other than peak energy use times. • Pre-treat heavily soiled areas and stubborn stains. • Select laundry products that are not damaging to the environment. • Buy laundry products in concentrated form and recycle containers.

  7. Sort and wash full loads of compatible garments. • Adjust the water level to the size of the load. • Select a wash cycle that matches the degree of soil. • Determine water temperature needed by the degree of soil. • Use a cold water rinse. • Save energy by line drying whenever possible.

  8. Clean the lint filter before each load when using a dryer. • Check the vent system regularly to avoid obstructions that will slow the airflow in a dryer. • Avoid overloading the dryer. • Remove clothes from the dryer promptly to prevent wrinkling and unnecessary ironing. • Remove clothes while slightly damp to allow air drying.

  9. Dry consecutive loads of wash to use residual heat left from the preceding load. • Plan to iron as many items as possible when you heat the iron to take advantage of the energy required for heating. • Sort items to be ironed or pressed bny temperature to avoid heating or cooling the iron between garments.

  10. How to Pack for Travel. • Items in a suitcase should be packed in the order of expected use. • Items expected to be used last should be packed on the bottom. • Items expected to be used first should be packed on top.

  11. Laundry Terms to Know • Laundering: the process of washing clothes using water and bleach, detergents and soaps. Clothes last longer and look better when they are taken care of properly. To get the most longevity out of your clothes, follow the manufacturer’s suggested methods of care.

  12. Dry Cleaning: a method of cleaning without water. When a label says “Dry Cleaned”, it means the garment should not be washed in water. It is a good idea to take the garment to a Dry Cleaning Facility.

  13. Bleaches: cleaning agents, but cannot be used as soaps or detergents. • Softeners: non-woven sheets used in the dryer to reduce clinging. • Ironing: to slide the iron back and forth. • Pressing: to lift and lower the iron over portions of the garment.

  14. Soap: reacts with the minerals in hard water to form white cloudy curds that float throughout the water. • These curds cling to fabrics, making whites look dingy and colors look dull. • Soaps work best in soft or softened water.

  15. Detergents: work well in hard or soft water. • For a whiter, brighter wash, use detergent rather than soap with hard water. • Detergents may be either high-sudsing or low-sudsing. • Detergents come in both liquid and powder forms.

  16. Water Softeners: neutralize the calcium and magnesium ions that are found in hard water. This keeps dulling residue from settling on your clothes. (Look for a ring after water has left.) • Fabric Softeners: make fabrics soft and fluffy. They help reduce wrinkling and control static electricity.

  17. Steps To Successful Laundering of Clothes • STEP 1: SORT THE CLOTHES • Sort clothes into dark and light piles and place them in the washing machine.

  18. STEP 2: SELECT WATER TEMPERATURE • Delicates, wools and silks are washed in cool water. • All others can be washed in warm or hot water.

  19. STEP 3: SELECT SOIL REMOVERS • Choose soap and detergents and add to the washing machine.

  20. STEP 4: ADD BLEACHES & SOFTENERS • Add these to the water when necessary. • Bleaches • Softeners

  21. STEP 5: DRYING CLOTHES • When wash is complete, place clothes in the dryer and choose time and temperature controls on the dryer. • Be careful not to day too long or at too high of a temperature. • Clothes should be removed as soon as the drying cycle is complete to prevent wrinkles.

  22. STEP 6: IRON OR PRESS GARMENTS • This helps to give garments a fresh, crisp look. • Ironing • Pressing
