Using The Odyssey as an ALLUSION in your own poetry.

Step 2 characterize someone or something
Step 2…Characterize someone or something!

To “Characterize” is to help develop a character or thing through description.

  • Physical appearance

  • Speech, thoughts, feelings or actions

  • Direct description by the author

    How many ways can you describe the person or thing from the stop you have chosen?


Step 3 pick a theme from the stop you have chosen
Step 3…Pick a THEME from the stop you have chosen!

“Theme” is the main idea in a work of literature. It is a perception about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. It is NOT stated, but inferred.

Themes can often be stated in one word.


Step 4 begin your poem
Step 4…Begin your POEM!

Write a poem based upon the THEME you have selected and use as many of the descriptions from your CHARACTERIZATION as possible to add detail to your poem.

  • Your Poem must have a title!

  • Your Poem must contain multiple STANZAs!

  • Your Poem must contain a minimum of 14 or 15 lines.

  • Use size 12 font.
