What is it? • • Local Government Management Certificate (LGMC) • For City, County and other Local Government Officials • Provides exposure to and training in ten core public management competencies • Professional development tool for current staff to improve skills required for success in local government management positions • May use a combination of professional development training sources to meet criteria • Requires six workshops to be completed throughOLLI www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

Why participate in the LGMC Program? • Professional development • Learn more about municipal management in Oregon • Prepare yourself to move forward in your career • Expand your understanding in new areas • Develop new skills • Learn from seasoned professionals • Gain credibility when competing for your next position www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

  4. Who should participate? • City, county and other local government officialsincluding: • Oregon city and county managers/administrators • Department heads • Mid-level managers/supervisors • Assistants, recorders, and analysts • Recent graduates new to local government • Managers/administrators new to Oregon • Employees wishing to move into local government management www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

  5. How do I meet the Certification Requirements? • OLLI Workshops • minimum of six workshops required • Other training in core areas • must provide proof of attendance and content • can use previously attended workshops as far back as 1/1/2007 • Experience • Must have at least 3 years experience in a specific core area (within last 10 years) • Core must have been primary job responsibility in local government • Example – Finance Director for at least 3 years • Graduate level coursework (within last 10 years) • limited to 5 hours per core area www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

  6. 10 CORE AREAS OF LGMC • Total hours for certification are: 140

Examples of the types of training that may be applied to the certification • Oregon Local Leadership Institute (OLLI) - Management Workshops (6 required) • League or Oregon Cities (LOC) Conference • International City/County Managers Association (ICMA) • Oregon City/County Managers Association (OCCMA) • Association of Oregon Counties • Other association workshops: • Oregon Municipal Finance Officers Association • Oregon City Planning Directors Association • Oregon Public Purchasing Association • Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders • Oregon City Attorney's Association • Local Government Personnel Institute • Labor Education & Research Center • City County Insurance Services • National League of Cities …Etc. • Other leadership and management training available to local government managers • Pacific Program • Cascade Program • Other approved programs Conference sessions and training must apply to the core areas.

  8. How does it work? Complete Entry Application LOC confirms past OLLI workshop hours in core areas (beginning 1/1/2007) LOC begins tracking progress toward certification Submit all non-OLLI training/education and experience to be evaluated for credit All forms available at: www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

  9. Step 1: Complete Entry Application Submit online at www.orcities.org/lgmc A welcome packet will be mailed to you within 2 weeks All forms available at: www.orcities.org/training/lgmc

Step 2: LOC confirms past LOC training credit hours • If you have attended courses through O.L.L.I. within the last three years – we will confirm your applicable credit hours via email . • *To receive certification through LOC's Local Government Management Certification program, each candidate must complete at least six core area workshops (of the applicant's choosing) through the Oregon Local Leadership Institute.  The purpose of this requirement is to give certificate candidates exposure to management nuances that are unique to Oregon. • For current OLLI training information visit: • www.orcities.org/training

Step 4: Submit training/education and experience • Non OLLI training and professional development activities should be submitted on one of the following forms: • *Elective Requirement Consideration Form (Training) • *Education & Experience Consideration Form (Graduate level education OR experience) • *Samples on the next slides All forms available at: www.orcities.org/training/lgmc
