  2. Overview • Extraction of rare earth in Gebeng Industrial Estate, Pahang • Ore comes from Mount Weld in Western Australia • Toxicity of the extraction process

  3. PURPORTED GAINS FOR MALAYSIA • Jobs ( are we short of jobs?) • Technology transfer ( but ore comes from Australia as very little local resources ) • Possible use for nuclear waste (in the future) • Downstream industries

  4. ACTUAL GAINS FOR WHOM? • Lynas - tax rebates for 12 years - rare earth that is extracted to be exported to countries like Japan, etc. Price of rare earth rising (so Lynas benefits) - claims to be able to break China’s monopoly

  5. IMPACT • Environmental • Public Health (including worker health) • Socio-economic - property/property prices - tourism - fishing - oil palm industry

  6. PEOPLE’S RESPONSE • Formation of Save Malaysia • Public Forums • Submission of Memorandum at Parliament and Australian High Commission • Formation of People’s Green Coalition • Engaging IAEA
