So how do you Manage Safety? • Just like any other job, you need to have a tool box with tools in it. • In Safety that is called a “Health and Safety Management System”(HSMS) • there are a lot of tools within that HSMS • tools are adjustable and adaptable in most cases

Safety on the Production Floor • First- Take a deep breath • Second- Scan the work area • How many people do I see? • Could any of them get hurt? • Third- Talk to employees about how they could get hurt (not what they did wrong) • Fourth- If it’s broke- fix it
Ground Rules for Safety Conversations • “How can we help you work safely?” • “What near misses have you had lately?” • “What´s your family doing these days?” • “What safety hazards are you seeing out there?” • “What did you do this weekend?” • “What have we asked you to do that´s unreasonable?” 34
Effective One-on-One Skills • Listen. Stop talking! • Ask questions to clarify understanding. • Repeat what was said. • Reflect the person’s feelings. • Avoid inappropriate body language. • Watch their reactions … crossed arms 35
