Monday: 09/15/2014 Warm Up Vocabulary Prefix: di Meaning: Two, Double Examples: Dimorphism diatomic Week 5 Warm Ups • When reading an article, what are the things that you are looking for to highlight and annotate? What is the goal? Explain your answer. When you are done with your Warm Up and Vocab, go back to your 7th grade Language Arts class and pick up your writing notebook. Turn in your Circuit Close Reading before you go.

Today… Introductions • One of the most important things that you can learn about writing essays is how to create a strong introduction. • Doing this: • Gets your readers attention • Introduces your thesis Essay • You will be composing an essay for “The Circuit” • I am looking for specific things…. HOMEWORK: • Complete “Introductions” worksheet. • Study for Unit 1 Test tomorrow.

Tuesday: 09/16/2014 • If you did not turn you Circuit Worksheet in yesterday, bring it up to me now. • No warm up or vocabulary today • Clear off your desk of everything except for a pen or pencil and your A.R. book. • When you finish your test, turn it in to the basket and read for A.R. HOMEWORK: Study for Vocab Test Friday.

  6. Today… INTRODUCE ESSAY PROMPT • We are completing our first essay on “The Circuit” by Francisco Jimenez • We will discuss the essay prompt and essay outline. BEGIN WORKING ON GRAPHIC ORGANIZER • The graphic organizer is the first step in helping you to organize your ideas. • Essays are built in steps, if you skip one, it is hard to do the following.

  7. Essay Prompt How does Francisco Jimenez use language to convey the Tone and Setting in his short story “The Circuit?” Consider word choice and how it conveys the authors tone about his surroundings. How can you prove his tone using word choice and literary devices?

  10. Test Corrections • We are going to be correcting the Unit 1 test. • This is to be done quietly…if you are talking you get a ZERO on your test. • Write C/B on the bottom and your name • Each questions is worth one point

Hooks and Background • What is the purpose of a hook? • Have out your hook worksheet • What are some hooks that you created yesterday? • Ex: Worldwide, 200 million children wake up every day and go to work instead of going to school. Of those 200 million children, 70% work in agriculture. • Why do we need to include background in our introduction? • Ex: • In the short story “The Circuit,” by Francisco Jimenez, Panchito is a young boy travelling state to state with his family following the harvest. Due to his migrant life style, obtaining an education can be very difficult.

  12. Thesis Statements 3 step process… 1. What is the topic/argument? 2. What is your opinion on that topic/argument? 3. What are the three ways that you are going to prove it? Prompt: How does Francisco Jimenez use language to convey the Tone and Setting in his short story “The Circuit”? Ex: Francisco Jimenez utilizes figurative language in his short story in order to describe the setting of the house where he lives, the field that he toils in, and the school that he attends.
