Their rules, their scale, their design include or exclude civil society, pedestrianism, equality, diversity (economic and otherwise), understanding of where water comes from and garbage goes, consumption or conservation. They map our lives.”  Rebecca Soinit How does place map the lives of students in rural NV? How they live? Work? Should we expect their post-secondary options be limited to moving/long commute to college location OR learn through online education?

Place Based Education Definition: place-based education promotes learning that is rooted in what is local—the unique history, environment, culture, economy, literature, and art of a particular place—that is, in students' own “place” or immediate schoolyard, neighborhood, town or community. Could Place Based education play a role in CTE? Tenants of Place based education • Interdisciplinary Study • Collaborative Learning • Learning Across Significant Differences • Personal Engagement • Linking Theory with Practical Applications Unique Changes to Rural Northern Nevada

Inaugural year for CTE 2015-16 (manufacturing and auto) Carson Campus Hubs? Can we identify education hubs that reflect place? Silver Stage High School—15 miles from TRIC, 30 miles from Fernley, Fallon, Yerington, Carson City. Centralized location. Manufacturing Identity. SSHS and area—80% free or reduced lunch.

Latino families in Lyon County Outreach efforts: • Identifying the barriers of Latinos from rural areas • Parent’s cultural and educational background • Humble families (don’t use free resources) • Most parents only attended up to 6th grade level of education • Maximum expectation: high school graduation • Language barriers • Residency fear factors • Empowering families by increasing awareness of programs available to guide students toward a college degree • Jump Start College • Bridge to Success • Latino Cohort Program

For students to qualify, they must: • Complete the CTE Program course sequence (3.0 GPA) • Pass the State End-of-Program Technical Skills Assessment • Pass the State Workplace Readiness Skills Assessment Benefits: Career exploration Minimize repetition Save money (tuition, books, etc.) Save time Connects learning to pathways for high-skill, high demand careers
